So hey,
our city has been declared a state of emergency after an earthquake (7.4 or 7.1, depending on the source).
kiwiana and I are extremely fortunate, we didn't lose power like most of Christchurch and there hasn't been much damage to our place. It's just a heap of stuff fallen of shelves and a lighting fixture hanging from the ceiling. We've both been on the phone off and on since 5am, making sure friends and family members are okay, and thankfully they are.
It seems that no one has been killed, two people are seriously injured. There's a lot of damage to some parts of the city, and to the water and sewage systems. We aren't allowed to flush the loo, and everyone has to conserve water. Most areas are starting to get power back now.
Also, people were apparently looting. What the fuck, people, who does that?
I would like the aftershocks to be stopping now.
ETA: One person has been confirmed dead from a heart-attack during the earthquake. Another aftershock of around 6.0 is expected in the next 48 hours.
