Canon Character and Series: Aileru from One Fine Day
In-Game Name: Aileru Alderliesten
Age: 26 (although he looks to be several years younger)
Gender: Male
Position & Ship: Passenger on the Amestris
Appearance:
Aileru is a fairly tall, young-looking man with pale skin. He has long blonde hair, which he usually wears with the back tied up in a haphazard ponytail. He also often wears a flower or hairclip in it. He is on the skinny side, but not excessively so. Despite a somewhat lazy appearance, he tends to dress formally.
Personality:
Aileru is notoriously fickle. He can shift between intimidating and malicious to benevolent and charming-but most of the time he seems aloof and indifferent, perhaps even scattered. His attitude tends to depend on who he’s dealing with, but often times there does not seem to be any sense behind it.
For instance; most people see a more reassuring side of him. This is one that is friendly, perhaps a little lazy, and, more often than not, clumsy or incompetent. When dealing with people that he knows, however, Aileru seems more distant. One could say that he behaves more maturely, if only slightly
Aside from this, there are only two things that make him show his more malicious side. Pranks are the first. It’s worth noting that Aileru is very childish, and he loves to fool people. These can be people that he knows, customers, or total strangers. In the latter cases, he’s just as likely to treat them normally, it simply depends on his mood. The other example consists of an actual change in mood. These typically come about from blows to his pride. Unfortunately, his pride is quite easy to wound (see childish) and he can take anything from calling him old, to not appreciating his work, to asking him to do something, very personally.
It’s no surprise then that he is an extremely vain person. He considers himself very attractive, not to mention a master magician and generally the best at anything that he so much as attempts. He enjoys positions of authority.
His childishness also makes itself known through his habits. He plays games that are intended for children, and loves cute things. Whenever he doesn’t get his way, he can throw a fit (or alternatively, plot revenge). He will go to ridiculous lengths to avoid doing something that he does not want to do, even if his methods of avoiding are more of a hassle than the task at hand would be.
While a lot of his mischief is intentional, much of it isn’t. Aileru can be genuinely scatter brained. He has a terrible memory for faces and people, to the point that he will not recognize someone as close as a housemate in public.
Lastly, he has a tendency to overdo things. Particularly nice things. Whenever he does good deeds (and he does do good deeds, see fickle) they rarely go as planned. It’s comparable to dealing with a genie wish. In fact, it seems that the only time that he has complete control over his magic is whenever he is using it for illicit purposes. In the latter case, the results are typically still disastrous, only this time said disaster is perfectly according to plan.
Abilities/Weapons:
Magic is Aileru’s only real talent. Curses, in particular, are his specialty. He excels at transformation magic, having cursed his boss and his boss’s wife with (anthropomorphic) penguin forms using a spell that no one else seems able to remove. He has also transformed a human into a frog and back with no difficulty.
He dabbles in alchemy, of the potion brewing variety. He has some knowledge of plants, and can create something as complex as a love potion.
However, the skill that he practices most seems to be some form of enchanting. This can be giving consciousness to inanimate objects or simply imbuing them with magical properties. He makes his living off of this sort of work.
While he is capable of elemental magic, he does not seem to have as much control over it as he does his curses. He once tried to make a sprout grow into a sapling, but it became a tree the size of a small building overnight (and came to life, no less). He also used a gust to deliver a letter, but by the time it reached its destination it had become a small storm (and again, came to life).
His methods of casting spells vary depending on the complexity and his familiarity with the spell. Simple spells are painless enough, needing only directions or gestures, while more complex incantations require preparations and/or reagents.
Being magic, Aileru's magic can be resisted or removed via typical magic-resisting means. This is clearly case specific, but generally boils down to opposing spells or enchantments that are tailored for that sort of thing, potions, etc..
How well can your character hack?:
He cannot hack.
Weaknesses:
Aileru claims to be allergic to sunlight. While it’s really not as bad as all that, he burns easily and unevenly, and prefers to stay out of the sun. This frustrates his dream of having the perfect tan.
Despite his powers, Aileru is not skilled at sensing other forms of magic. He cannot identify magical objects or creatures without close observation. This means that he cannot sense the magical abilities of other people, nor can he see any sort of spirits that are hidden from normal humans.
Aileru either aggravates or terrifies more or less everyone that he knows. His “best friend” once boarded a train to avoid a visit that Aileru announced. Because of this, he tends to have few people to rely on.
Although he likes cute things, he also loves the morbid and the occult. He will do anything, even work, to get his hands on spellbooks and the like.
His lack of control over much of his magic causes all kinds of problems. Aileru rarely deals with the problems himself, but there are plenty of people who would be less than happy to see him again. His tree incident was newsworthy, and threw an entire town into distress-although it was never actually traced back to him.
This lack of control extends to other areas, notably clumsiness. While he is sometimes frustrated with his inability to do things, other times he seems oblivious to it.
History:
Aileru was born to a wealthy Ivonian family. Aside from being an only child, there was nothing particularly exceptional about his childhood until he was eight years old. He began showing early signs of magical talent. These became more numerous over the next two years when his parents finally decided to apprentice him to a friend of the family, a magician living in Abantiare.
The magician received another apprentice at nearly the same time, and the two boys were trained together. It was clear that Aileru was the more talented of the two, in fact the scope of his powers soon surpassed even their trainer. This went to Aileru’s head very quickly, and he began referring to himself as the “teacher” to the other boy while ignoring/avoiding many of his own teacher’s lessons. He began to teach himself magic. He would “borrow” forbidden or otherwise malicious texts from his teacher. This is where his abilities took a contemptible turn.
By his late teenage years, Aileru was already a more accomplished magician than the man who trained him. Aside from training young magicians, he owned a small business that sold useful, basic enchantments to the townspeople. He decided to take Aileru on as a business partner. Having completed his training, the other boy moved to a nearby town shortly after. Aileru still keeps in touch, much to his “friend’s” distress.
Despite Aileru’s laziness and tendency to skip (hide from) work entirely, his teacher-turned-boss saw an increase in business. This is because Aileru had begun selling (mostly harmless) curses on the sly. Oddly, these became popular among the upper class. His boss decided to run with this, although he worries constantly for the effect that it’s going to have on the reputation of his business.
It was not exactly uncommon for Aileru to end any sort of confrontation by cursing the other party. This had never actually happened to his boss until one day when he was trying to drag Aileru back to their office (which is not an altogether uncommon occurrence). Aileru put a curse on the man and his wife that gave them anthropomorphic, penguin-like forms. His boss tried every way he knew to break the curse, but was unsuccessful, and Aileru himself refused to acknowledge that anything had actually happened. He ran away shortly after.
In the months since then, Aileru has been traveling Ivona. If someone asks, he claims to be “on the run” from the wrath of his boss. In actuality, his boss is desperate to have him back, as business is piling up.
