+005 | HOW TO COLOR SCREENCAPS

Jan 12, 2012 13:06

Hi everyone! It's Paola again! So, some people asked me how to color screencaps, you know, how to make them colorful and some coloring tips, so I'll give you a tutorial of how I do mine! I'll try to make this clear and simple as I can! Just keep reading and follow the steps. Thanks in advance!

Step 1: Choose your screencap.
Sometimes you'll need to choose your screencap according to the idea of the color you want to give to them, so after you choose your screencap look at it and try to figure out which color will look better on it. This is the screencap I'm going to use for this tutorial. Is Dean Winchester from Supernatural. Sometimes is so hard to color those screencaps! So I thought that the color that will fit better this image will be orange.
Let's start.
Step 2: How to make the screencap look better.
The first thing to make a screencap look better is adjusting the brightness and contrast, you can find this tool in Image>Adjustments>Brightness/Contrast:

Remember to try using HQ or Blu-Ray Screencaps, if you can't find some place to take them then make your screencaps! You can do it with GomPlayer and downloading your favorite shows and movies. So going back to the tut I'll change the b&c:

and looks like this:

Also you can just duplicate the layer and fit it to screen, just change the opacity, it's another option:).
Next, I'll adjust the vibrance:

NOTE: If you don't have the vibrance tool (which is in Image>Adjustments>Vibrance) you can use Hue/Saturation, but it'll not look like this because it's a totally different tool, if you don't try to apply just +5 of Hue&Sat.
The image looks like this now:

Now it looks more colorful I think :3.
Step 3: Time for patience and gradients.
This step might be hard to you because you need to practice a bit more and familiarize with Ps and his functions.

Let's start with a lightning gradient (I make them by myself) If you didn't light something before try to use this tutorial

At the start It'll be probably hard to you but as the title says be patient :3. It's normal n_n. So I'll use this gradient:

It's in PNG format, you can save it. I'll fit it to screen mode and this is what I've got:

But I don't like how the blue fits this image so I'll go to Hue & Saturation and change the color of the gradient.
This is the final result:

It's better now! Next I'll add another gradient. Same step I'll change it to orange.

what I've got:

Another gradient:

You can put it whenever you want! This is my result:

Of course I changed the color:P. Now I'll add some vibrance, this looks so gray lol. Apply vibrance to +59 , if you don't have vib. use hue&sat but in a moderate type, then the image will look over saturated and we just want some colorful caps:). Result:

I'll add some levels, They can make a picture looks really great. This are my sets.

Which looks like:

Now some color balance:

The result:

And finally some lightning:

Fit it to screen and move it around the picture, I have this:

Then I applied some contrast (+49) just to make the picture look a bit saturated:

I'll add three more gradients to give some strength to the colors and apply them in soft light:

And a color fill in soft light too (color used: #7a684b)

Result:

And that's all I think! Remember not to sharpen and if you just the edges, or the lightning effect will look horrible. Thank you for reading the entry and wait and also asking for it! I thought nobody liked my type of coloring:P. If you have doubts message me!

Hearts, Paola.
