I've just arrived. Today was my first day exploring the city and I had a really great time. Last night I took a cab to my apartment and found my room, small and humid, but attached to a screened-in porch. Pretty sweeet!
So then my house-mate's friend Scott took me around a little, he showed me how to get downtown and we ate a little, and there were tons of people out doin stuff. A bunch of guys rode by wearing spedos on bicycles... and we ran into a bunch of very dressed up drunk people - maybe there was a wedding?? It was pretty exciting, I could hardly pay attention to what Scott was saying 'cuz there were so many other things going on.
The place we stopped to eat was showing the Derby, or some horse race. I thought that was amazing since I never see anything equestrian on tv anywhere :)
Today I just wandered a little more. I found the Union Terrace which is a nice little port area over Lake Mendota, there's another one on the other side of the center of town. I'm gonna go swimming soooon! It's been in the high 80's here pretty consistently, so I'm HOT. India will be fun...
Seu Jorge is playing a concert here on Tuesday! One of the girls in the SASLI program (South Asia Summer Language Institute) emailed everyone about it so I might get to go to that. He's the guy that did the music for the Life Aquatic.
I still have to find all my Wisconsin stuff though... since I had to reinstall everything onto my computer that could be interesting. I wasn't very organized at home before leaving either so everything is either lost or hard to find. I hope they didn't already send us ID cards...
I have three house mates, Uzma, Emily and Meagan. Meagan is shy, she just brought my desk back and that was the first time I've seen her. Now I have furniture in the hot little roomie. I dunno if they smoke... I didn't know how to ask, so I'll probably just do it on the porch and if someone complains then I'll know. Emily is only here on the weekends, but she went home this weekend, she works at a camp.
I love living here - so far... I anticipate growing to love it more. My neighborhood is all residential and fairly quiet, but two blocks away is the Badger Football Stadium (huge), and then a street with tons of shops on it. Everyone has Honda mopeds and I wanna see if I can rent one... except I actually probably won't. I had decided I want to work at a bookstore, but then Uzma said they're hiring at her workplace - sadly it's telecom for the hearing impaired... a lot like what I used to do at Livebridge except more typing involved. I will probably take it because I'm sure it pays well and they won't care how long I'm here or how many hours I want, I just need to be able to get away and play a lot!!
My hopes of finding a barn are already dwindling. I didn't bring my riding boots and I doubt I'll have boatloads of free time to go out to the country and search, but maybe I'll make it out at least once. I could probably find transportation. There are buses that run pretty frequently. I've been told I'll be living on the 6. So, now you know.
I'm gonna try to upload some dready pics now!! :)
