FILLED: Cure From The East (6/6) anilkex1 December 3 2013, 17:59:07 UTC
By the time they returned to the bunker, it was clear that Kevin was on his own in the kitchen. Dean’s head was pulsing to the rumble of the Impala’s engine as they pulled into the garage, and he was shivering so hard it made steering difficult. Kevin had a wild-eyed look about him, and when the car finally stopped, he jumped out.

“Jesus Christ, I didn’t think we’d make it back alive. You shoulda just let me drive.”

“No one…” Dean sneezed. “But Sam or I…” He sneezed again. “And barely even Sam…” He sneezed yet again. “Drives my baby. Understand?” He leaned against his girl and panted from the fit.

Kevin tilted his head and raised his eyebrows. “Riiiight. It’s much better to crash her with ME INSIDE because you CAN’T STOP SNEEZING LONG ENOUGH to keep her IN ONE LANE.”

“Shut up. Help me with the bags and get cooking.”

Once Dean dropped the groceries on the kitchen table, he grabbed the bags of “sick supplies” and went in search for his brother.

xxxxx

As Dean walked towards the library, he knew he was in trouble. Not big trouble, but trouble nonetheless. His head was hurting, the sneezing was annoying, and his nose was running.

He sighed, because he knew Sam was going to be a bitch about this. (“You never slow down enough to take care of yourself, Dean...you need to rest...take it eeeeeeasy…”) Dean rolled his eyes. That kind of schedule was over, like, eons ago, Sam, get over it. I’m fine.

But he wasn’t fine, and he knew it.

He slowed as he approached Sam, who was still on the couch, just as Dean left him. Only now, he was burrowed under the blanket, shivering and sneezing, and sweating and coughing.

Shit - he was a fucking mess. Dean was a mess, but not that bad.

He cleared away the crap in his throat and pulled out a fresh box of tissues. It looked like Sam went through almost an entire box already.

“Hey there…” At the sound of Dean’s voice, Sam poked his head out from under the blanket and attempted a smile, only to have it turn into a harsh, wet cough.

Dean grimaced and tossed the tissue box onto Sam’s lap. Sam sighed in relief, tore open the top and grabbed a handful. He pressed them to his nose just as he sneezed again.

He sniffed. “Oh by god...this is...fuckig...awful…”

Dean pulled a large recliner close and sat down heavily. “Yeah, I know, kid. I’m sorry. I got you some Nyquil…” He opened the package and poured out a cup of the magic green syrup.

Sam was eyeing him suspiciously. Dean met his gaze as he handed over the medicine. “What?”

Sam huffed a laugh and took the cup. “You’re sick, too.”

Dean blinked. “What are you talking about?”

Sam swallowed the contents of the cup, making a face at the disgusting taste. “Why cad’t they bake these id a better flavor?” He sniffed and added, “You’re hads are slow, abd you’re shakigd.”

It took Dean a second to understand Sam’s congested speak, but when he did, he just slumped against the back of the chair and sighed. “I feel like shit.” He sneezed right then, and groaned.

At that moment, Cas wandered into the room, yawning, handing a twenty dollar bill to Sam. “You were right, Sam. He ‘fessed up before five.”

Oh wow! I love this! And I love your style! Consider me a fan! Time for a list, I think.

1. I LOVE THE COMPARISON BETWEEN THE PAIR OF THEM! The way they're expecting one another to be bitchy about it and the whiny voices, and the betting on one another giving in. Amazing!

2. Your characterisation. Is just incredible. And your dialogue, too. Just so very in character. It just works.

3. I love Dean figuring out that Sam's ill immediately and Sam wondering how he did it.

4. I love bitchy Kevin. That just works for his character as well.

5. Oh gosh, I love the beginning of illnesses at the best of times and you marking off symptom by symptom as they develop is just irresistable.

6. And OOOOOH... the way you dropped in the sneakiness element to looking after Sam. LOVE it. It's like you chip at the surface and there's a whole lot of darker stuff going on.

7. It's sweet when Sam finally gives in and admits how he's feeling, and sweeter still when he suggests he takes the book to bed so he didn't have to feel so guilty.

8. Ha! I love Kevin's mum, and I love the idea that she got the soup recipe from a soy sauce label. You make the characters feel so natural. It's wonderful.

9. Like chicken noodle soup... without chicken... or noodles... Brilliance!

10. AWWW! Dean can't really explain their home remedies in a way that makes any sense to anyone outside.

11. Dean progressively getting all of the symptoms that he remembers in Sam... adorable.

12. They're adorably miserable at the end, but they're gonna be there for each other so that's okay.

I love this story so much, seriously, I love the parallels and most of all, I love the way that you portray the characters. I think I will have to spend the rest of my days lapping around your heels and hoping you write more Supernatural.

:D Thank you!!!! Kevin wasn't as hard as I thought he'd be. I was terrified of Cas, so I just stuck him in at the end. :/

I'm nervous of Cas as well! He strikes me as difficult to get right! That little bit of dialogue rang true for me though, so you're on to a good start!

Awwww don't be scared of Cas, he isn't scary!

But nonetheless this was a delicious read :) For all the reasons listed by sexualoddity (darn you make the bestest list) Seeing Dean getting sick too was my favorite part because... well besides Cas, I'm a Dean girl too.

I hope I make as good a job as you did with this story!

OKAY. after last night's episode i definitely needed to read this again. you did SUCH a good job with all of it.

i loved the progression of sam's illness and all of the raw details you added and how realistic each symptom was, especially because i'm used to experiencing each one every single day when getting sick but you had it set up to go like that in, like, half-hour intervals, so that was really cool (especially the soreness of his throat! nobody talks about that, but sometimes when you're getting sick it's just RAAWWW and everything everything hurts).

aw, and the little subtleties of dean getting sick at first, like the coughing and clearing his throat and then sneezing in the grocery store, oh my god, so cute (and so creative what you did with him remembering sam's symptoms and then experiencing them)!

ooh, and the asian grocery store! and the mention of how it was a little further. i don't know why, but i really liked that. and also the awkwardness in the car.

and your characterization! WOW! i've said it before but you've got them pegged. it's incredible. and i love how you wrote kevin's bitchy teenager attitude, it's perfect and it's just so HIM.

and also castiel at the end! i love how you set that up. really really love it.

your dialogue is amazing and so natural... it feels so real to me! you're really really really good at this.

you filled this prompt SO well. exactly what i wanted and then some. i am really looking forward to more from you!!!
