"Mommy?" The soft whisper invades Padme's sleep, along with the little pokes to her ribs, disturbing a rather peaceful dream.
She stretches a bit and rubs her eyes before opening them to peer at the little seven year old boy beside the pilot's seat. "Hmm?" She mutters sleepily. "What is it, Luke?" A glance at the chronometer tells her it's still late. Very late for one little boy to be wide awake. "What're you doing up?"
"Mommy, are you sleeeeeeping?" Definitely completely and totally awake.
She can't help but smile, though. Both at the question, and at the tone in which it's posed. She sits up, and picks her son up, setting him in her lap before leaning back in her seat. "Well, I was. Why aren't you in bed?"
Luke shrugs, laying his head on her shoulder. The answer's obvious to him. "'Cause I couldn't sleep."
"All right. Well, why can't you sleep?" She closes her eyes, trying to get at least a little rest while they talk.
"Thinking about Daddy. Do you think he thinks about us too?"
She swallows slightly and sighs. Even after seven years, the topic of Anakin is still a touchy one. Made even worse by the knowledge that some day she'll have to tell them the whole truth. But she doesn't want them growing up thinking their father's a monster. So some details have been kept to herself. "I'm sure he does."
He falls silent for awhile, speaking up when she thinks he might have finally gone back to sleep. "Mommy?"
"Yes, Luke?"
"I had a bad dream..." He whispers.
She kisses the top of his head. "Dreams can't hurt you," she assures him. That's another truth he doesn't need to know the full details on just yet. She looks down, seeing the fear in his eyes. "No matter how frightening they are. What did you dream about?"
"I dreamed about a man in black. I think he was a man- I couldn't see his face. He was tall, and he had a mask on. He was looking for us. He was gonna take us away." Luke shivers. "You won't let anyone take us away, right, Mommy?"
"Of course I won't," she promises. She wonders if the dream might be prophetic. What if some day, she took them some place to hide, and the Empire was already there waiting for them? What if they are waiting on the very next planet they visit? Granted, as far as she knows, they still believe her and the children died on Polis Massa. But it's a very real concern that they might some day learn the truth. She's good at hiding- she knows there's plenty of places they can go. There's lots of places anyone who knew her would never think she would seek refuge at.
Still. Just in case, she leans over and changes their course. She didn't get so far by leaving things to chance. Even if it meant changing plans based on the dreams of two young children. Just in case.
Still holding Luke, she leans back again, smiling when she realizes he's already gone back to sleep. She closes her eyes to try to do the same.
"Mommy?" This time it's her daughter she hears calling to her just as she's drifting off to sleep. "I had a bad dream..."
She wraps her other arm around Leia as she climbs up into her lap. "All right. Tell me all about it."
Yes, it was going to be a long night.
