I gave up on the idea of posting 'My Year in Review" (books and whatnot) but I'd still like to post illustrations from some of my favourite 2013 picture books. Not published in 2013, just read by me then. The first is Clean Clarence (1959) by Priscilla Friedrich with illustrations by Louis Slobodkin. I recommend it highly. Clarence is small because he's a clean pig and won't eat with his siblings. When they rush to the trough, he sticks up his nose. When told by his mother that pigs are messy, Clarence stares stubbornly back. He eats with a knife and fork and wears a yellow raincoat and rubber boots to keep off the mud. Clarence is, in all respects, not as other pigs.
