2. How did The Lord of the Rings (the book) change your life? I was going to ask about the films as well but I see that claudia603 has just asked that question. Feel free to answer it a second time, if you like. A good thing bears repeating. If neither the book nor the films changed your life then you can tell me about your favourite body moisturiser ( Read more... )

The book, which I read at 15, and the movies both changed my life, but in different way.

The book changed my life because it was the first fantasy book I read where I really, REALLY wanted the world to be real. I was totally invested in the characters.. especially Sam and Frodo... well, all the Hobbits but especially them. To the point where when it seemed that Pippin had died at the black gate I was devastated. I was also beyond consolation when Frodo left Sam behind to go to the Undying Lands. I clearly remember throwing the book at a wall. LOL! I think that's when the idea awakened in me to write my OWN version of these events... tho it's an idea that would not come to fruition for many years.

The movies changed my life mainly because of the priceless friends I acquired because of my involvement in that fandom. And, of course, my love for and writing of Sean and Elijah.

Both versions... AND the wonderful audio version narrated by Rob Inglis.. have added incalculable richness to my life. I'm deeply grateful for all of them... tho more for the book than the movie. LOL!

Love...

Did you throw the book at the wall and then read the appendices?

*laughs* Honestly? I don't remember. I just have this vivid image of lying on my bed being so upset I just threw the book against the wall. I can SEE that wall so clearly!

No question I read the appendices later. And the histories as well. I believe that Tolkien originally was going to have Sam GO with Frodo. But.. if he had we wouldn't have had such fertile ground for fan fiction.

Great questions!
