Anticipated Temp Costume Shop Manager Position Fall 2009

We are anticipating a maternity leave replacement opening in our shop this coming fall term. This is an excellent opportunity for a professional theatre technician building or contemplating a career in academia, or journeyman freelancer interested in management.. .. even a sabbatical gig for experienced teachers. Costume Shop Supervisor needed for Fall 2009 semester (temporary leave replacement) .

5 day week (plus dress rehearsals as necessary). Mid August -Mid December 2009.

Primary responsibility: supervising the day-to-day activities of mid-size academic costume shop with staff of graduate and undergraduate workers at varying skill levels, to ensure the completion of all costumes as needed for productions. Expected duties: coordinating all projects on the calendar with student, faculty, and guest artist designers, providing workroom assignments based on skill level of students, scheduling and workflow, maintaining show budget paperwork and expenditures. The semester's production schedule of 3 main stage and 2 studio projects (in rep) is primarily contemporary this year - including a new script (ACTF entry) and the musical Blood Brothers; excellent organization and garment alteration skills are absolutely necessary. Appropriate technical and managerial guidance for student designers; training for lab students in basic sewing is expected. Attendance at dress rehearsals as deemed necessary. Purchasing for shows and general supply will be coordinated with resident staff/faculty. Teaching and possible design opportunities exist, commensurate with experience and interest.

This position requires a minimum BA/BFA in theatrical costume (or a related field) + significant professional experience in costume shop operation; MFA and related education experience is preferred. Knowledge of garment construction and alteration for the theatre a must; knowledge and skill in sewing equipment maintenance, strong interpersonal skills, strong managerial, supervisory, and multi-tasking skills required.
