Today I went to an informational session about an accelerated program to become a licensed teacher in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Sounds pretty cool. I was worried about one of the requirements, which is five years of full-time work experience. I have not had that much full-time work experience, what with grad schools and being ill and being unemployed and such. But I asked about this and the co-director of the program said I'd be fine, they just want to make sure a 22-year-old doesn't go through this program meant for older people with more experience. Well, I have a lot of life experience, some no one else should want to share.
So, maybe I will do this and become a teacher. It' something that I've always thought about doing. Even when I was in school people said I should be a teacher since I could often explain things better than many teachers could. And just this weekend I was talking with Stuart about the things he had to do before school on Monday, and I gave a suggestion and his response was, "That's a good idea. That's a REALLY good idea. Maybe you should be a teacher." So I began my quest to see what I had to do.
Here's the nice thing: If I get a nice person at the school district, and if they really need a teacher for a subject like, say, math, once I take and pass the tests I need before beginning the program to be licensed, I can possibly get a job and already be teaching while going through the program. That's pretty nice. Not guaranteed, but nice to think about.
The problem is one of geography. I was excited when I found out Old Dominion University offered this program. I can walk there from where I live. But I found out they don't actually teach the program there. Twice a year they do it in Virginia Beach, twice a year they do it in Hampton, and once a year it's in Portsmouth, but none of the locations is easily accessible by public transportation. How nice.
But the best part was when I asked about the full-time work thing, and I mentioned the illness putting a damper on things, the lady said, "Give me a hug" and I did. That was sweet. She likes me.
