The Last Days of Krypton by Kevin J. Anderson
Genre: Soft Science Fiction
Part of a Series? no
Rating: 7.5/10
Reading this book was a lot like watching the prequels of Star Wars - I knew how it was going to end, but I was really curious to see how we were going to get there. The answer? Painfully. The book was good (and made more fun by introducing characters from Superman - Zod, of course, but also Brainiac and J'onn J'onzz. And it also had numerous Superman references, such as the S symbol and mistaking a spaceship for a bird or a plane), but it was kind of painful to read, knowing how everything would end up. Krypton was besieged by disaster after disaster, each one almost destroying the planet. Which happened in the end, obviously. Most interesting was seeing how much Jor-El was like Superman - someone who gave everything trying to save his people, only to have them continually turn against him and blame him when things didn't go exactly as planned. All in all, it was a good book, but one in which there could be no happy ending. So I guess I'll just have to be content with its eucatastrophe.
