There came a point on the night of Dec.28th, when I passed the next three days in my head and realized that I would not be home until the first. In my wanderings, I would not have time to drive home. This realization had in time, I stocked my car with changes of clothes and the necessary toiletries and books.
On Dec.29th, I worked, then headed over to Jack's house, always happy to be free of work (that'll be another entry). I arrived to find out that Jack was not there and would not be back that night. Fortunately, his family is my family now, so the night with them is never awkward. Or at least, not because I am unrelated. A movie was planned, but his brothers' addictions to video-games proved tenacious, so I popped in my own movie: The Agony and the Ecstacy. It's about Michelangelo (Charlton Heston) and Pope Julius II (Rex Harrison). I so very much wanted to see Rex Harrison play a renaissance pope! It was not the masterpiece the trailers made it out to be, but it was worth my time. I loved the line, "God made Homer blind, but gave him the power to see the world more clearly than any other man." Thence to rum and bed.
Dec. 30th I worked, then drove coincidentally form Hanover, MD to Hanover, PA (50 miles). A teacher-friend of mine lives there and it was one of the few times I could see him. His son is not quite three, but speaks clearly and uses full sentences. Yes, my friend is an English teacher. That boy has more toys of absolute coolness than any other I've seen! We played a game called Heroscape for hours. I got my butt kicked, then kicked everyone else's. Elven archers rock! We fell into geekiness for hours until sleep overtook us. That was a very comfy guest bed.
On New Year's Eve, I got up early and drove the 50 miles back to work. After working, I drove the further 50 miles to
tirani's and
y2kdragon's house.
jateshi and
jerro1 were also there, with an
daphodil2 arriving later. As always, the party was awesome. What can I say to those who have never been? To say the food was excellent, the dessert sinful, the conversation baudy, intelligent, and geeky, the stories lively, and the alcohol plentiful is to give a rather forensic description of what should be described in poetry. The year 2006 was disposed of, being an unhappy year, and 2007 hailed for hope of better times. Such moments should always be spent with family.
New Year's Day began in a comfortable bed, with a warm blanket, and a complete and total absence of a hangover. Hoping these were portents, I hurredly assembled my stuff and left for work, sadly before
tirani could make breakfast. And it is a general rule that one never turns down food prepared by her if at all possible. The 50 miles back to work were rainy and sad. The day was slow, mercifully so. I left knowing that I was going to enjoy the very first day off in seven days on the 2nd. The Day was spent relaxing and enjoying being at home after three days of travelling and reveling.
Today I got up early to take the Metro into DC to see
oftheeast, who was in town for a few days from MN. We went to see the Bibles-Before-1000 AD exhibit and it was so nifty. First there was Greek, then Hebrew. Then came a smattering of Aramaic, Syriac, and Arabic. Finally there came the Latin bibles. There were also Glagolitic bibles; I like what
oftheeast said: that the Glagolitic alphabet looks like it was devised by teenage boys. So many beautiful books! We hopped back on the Metro to visit an old Italian market with excellent snadwiches and cheap wine. I AM going back there. Especially for the wines.
Thence to
fritterfae's house to eat and play games. At their dining room table they have a pew (a whole one!) at one part! Games were so funny! I won both Settlers of Catan and Apples to Apples! I lost the Unfortunate Boyfriend game, but had fun losing, so it was good. Double-Stuff Oreos were also consumed, much to my happiness, hyperness, and twitching. I was sad to go, but go we did. Off to bookstores and another of
oftheeast's friend's houses, one whom I missed seeing greatly. The book-booty was cool, but I'm really glad I got to see his friend again.
And now I am here, almost done typing. Let this be a lesson to you: just because I don't post here about my Life very often doesn't mean I'm not having one. Feel free to join in anytime!
