I got a haircut

Wow. I haven't smiled so much since, like, wow.

Brianna was the student assigned to my hair this morning. I requested something long enough to slap into a ponytail, and would still look decent right after rolling out of bed. She consulted with the instructor and they thought that a blunt bob would be best. First, Brianna washed and conditioned my hair, and massaged my scalp. I don't know if this is standard procedure or if my hair looked particularly oily, but my self-consciousness melted away when she started rubbing the shampoo into my hair.

Then she switched me back to the salon chair and began to cut it. Plaintive yet soulless strains of pop music piped through the air. Behind me, a student lectured about the evils of siliicon-based conditioners like Pantene. Somebody gave me a complimentary hand massage. Oh, god. The hand massage. I get shivers thinking about what she did to my knuckles.

Then Brianna blow dried and flatironed my hair to within an inch of its metaphorical life, since hair is made of keratin and is technically dead, except for the follicles, which were not blow dried.

It only cost $18+HST=$20.34.

The haircut itself is pretty good too. It's the kind of hair that Pansy Parkinson would rock in her 30s and it's SO SOFT, nearly like running your fingers through a tray of <75um fines at the bottom of a stack of round Gilson sieves. Actually I thought I looked like Snape when I was sitting in the salon chair, the black protective cape was on and my glasses were off. The haircut doesn't flatter like long layers did, but it suits me better anyways.

Pros:
  • Downtown Kitchener is accessible from nearly everywhere in KW
  • Nice facilities - light wood, looks way classier than the price tag.
  • Everybody, down to the coat check reception guy, was totally nice and professional
  • Good haircut in the same price range as what you'd get at, say, Woodside Square, where the haircuts cost $13 and the receptionist is kind of surly.
Cons:
  • It took an hour and ten minutes. I wasn't in a rush, but you might be.
  • Brianna tried to sell me some of the anti-frizz products and serums at the very end of it, but she wasn't pushy about it, and I diverted her attention by asking her to recommend a brush instead.
Overall:
  • Student hairdressers offer a level of service comparable to that of full-blown professionals, at a fraction of the cost. Absolutely brilliant value and care.
Then I crossed the street and ate soup. The lobster bisque was nearly as good as the haircut.
