A pound of pure artic powder, please

So, the weather has been predicting a few inches of snow as a possibility for today for the past few days. Starting around 5:00 . . . maybe an inch or two. Possibly three.

I leave work just after 4:30 and head to my car. The snow had arrived early and had dusted the ground at this point. I arrive at the daycare just at 5:00. Traffic was a little slow as people dealt with the unfamiliar sight of snow on the Interstate. How much snow? Not much. The passage of cars was tossing it about so it just looked like a misty fog.

I load up the kids and start driving home. The drive normally takes all of 20 minutes. Today? Over one hour. By the time I arrived at the daycare the snow had started falling at one inch per hour.

Okay, Boolean is probably saying "Meh" and Captain Spam is coughing in his sleeve about southern wusses and snow. Yes, I am aware that this doesn't sound like much for an Ottawa winter or even a Michigan one. But the difference is, no one here knows what to do with snow so they slam on their brakes and the city salt trucks get stuck in the traffic jam. I've been in St. Louis for the winters there. A major snow in St. Louis is easier to drive in than a more minor one here because someone is keeping the roads clear there. So, really, no jibes people.

Anyway, after a painfully long drive I get to the hill leading up to my house. A hill that is getting some major construction. In a car with two wheel drive and all weather tires. The good news is that I almost made it. Got about 2/3rds of the way up before the grade of the hill was too steep for my tires to make headway with the layer of ice underneath. Bad news is that I had to carry one of my children, a bag of juice, my briefcase, and a nebulizer the rest of the way up while trying to lure my other child to walk behind me. Did I mention that I came from work? Yeah. Those weren't snow shoes I was wearing but leather dress shoes with soles slick enough to run the luge down.

I'm currently snowed in. The snow is still falling and sleet or an ice storm may be due later in the evening. Anyone want to place wagers on if I am going to work in the morning?
