It feels like so long ago now. Standing there with you, preparing to leave as I had so many times before. You made a quip about myself and the sun, just as you always did, but this time...this time there was something else. This time, you told me that he'd compared us to the moon and the night. You laughed. I smiled. And we made a wager.
For years, I clung to that idea. Long after you had tried to leave me, that thought kept me...sane. Or what seemed to pass as such. After all, I continued to speak with you through the moon. Where else could you have gone? You wouldn't, no, couldn't have truly disappeared. You were too strong for that. Too perfect. Too...untouchable. So I continued to watch, continued to speak, and continued to strive towards you. As the moon, no one could take you from me. You couldn't possibly slip through my fingers again.
How wrong I was.
That boy...That damnable boy...I needed to know what had made him so special, what had made him so important to you. I continued to test him, tried to find what it is you saw. I realized I had to face him myself. I had to see in person what you must have seen. And it was the last thing I ever saw.
He took from me my only link to you. My eyes. He destroyed my eyes. I could no longer see your light, could no longer know if you were there. I could no longer reach you. All that was left was my own enveloping darkness. All that was left was for me to be swallowed whole by my own emptiness. I was alone. You'd finally left me.
And I can't take it.
