I'm not going to put this under a spoiler because I'm assuming that mostly everyone on my friends list has read, or has no intention, of reading Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
Snape is the Half-Blood Prince. A Prince is the heir of a King. Who is considered the king of the jungle? A lion. What is the animal symbol for Gryffindor? A lion!
I'm sure that Snape will turn out to be the heir of Gryffindor. His mom having the last name Prince may be another clue that JKR has given to us.
