The Meme of Great Details, Day 8: A Moment

Sep 09, 2010 11:03

I’m going to tell you about a moment not long ago - less then a week ago, actually.

I had been on the road for more than four hours, with my friends Mia, Liv and Anna; we were going to meet two of our other writing friends for the weekend. We were two hours late, because there was a lot of traffic, and our departure had been delayed. We were all very excited; we were going to Kaarina’s home where we had been last year, but being on the road together was also a big part of the fun. Anna and I in the backseat, Liv and Mia behind the wheel. We talked very little about writing, because Kaarina and Emma weren’t there…

Kaarina lives in a house a few kilometres from a city, and the last part is a narrow winding road through fields and small hills; almost like a sea somehow… Then the road gets even narrower, covered only with gravel, and it takes a sharp turn up on a steep hill. There is a house, but not the right house; we have to go on a little longer, and there, suddenly, is her little brown house surrounded by small trees and bushes, and a smaller house with a sauna on the ground floor and a bedroom (only used in the summer) on the other floor.

We get out of the car and look around; everything is quiet. The day is sunny but cool; the summer is definitely over already. We don’t see or hear anyone as we take our bags out of the car; we say “Where is our welcome committee? Maybe they’ve given up on us by now…”, and we open the door.

“They are here!” Emma says (she is there already because she lives closer to Kaarina), and “Welcome, welcome!” Kaarina says. The hall is narrow, but once I get my shoes off, I give Emma and Kaarina a hug, and I look around in Kaarina’s kitchen where the soup is boiling on the stove and I take a look into her living room. Nothing is elegant or stylish, everything is cosy and homely. Later in the evening, one of the less shy cats will show up.

It doesn’t feel like the last time I was there was as much as one year ago. The place looks so familiar; it feels like this is the same time, as if we’re back at the very same day. As if all our meetings - once in the autumn, twice in the winter and once in the spring - takes place during the same weekend. And now the weekend has just begun. It is a good moment.

(And the rest of the weekend was very nice and creative, too.)
