"Oh my god, is that Heechul?"
"Look, it's Kim Heechul!"
He could hear the excited whispers from all around him. At first, he thought for sure they must be imagining it - Kim Heechul left an year ago, and no one had heard from him since - but he looked in the direction they were pointing and sure enough, there he was.
Hankyung froze.
He looked different - he'd changed since freshman year. His hair was shorter and darker in color, but it was him, without a doubt. He was tall and slim and dressed in a bomber jacket and skinny jeans. He was standing near the subway exit, waiting around with luggage in tow.
Somehow, he was even more stunning than Hankyung remembered him being.
"Hey." Heechul's brother was at his side, giving him a quick hug and kiss. They exchanged greetings, but from where Hankyung was standing they looked awfully half-hearted. Heechul's brother nodded and the two of them left the terminal, and Hankyung saw that neither of them were smiling.
He felt his own cell phone vibrate in his pocket, and knew immediately what it was - a new post from Gossip Girl. Sure enough, when he looked at the screen, he saw an update on Heechul's arrival. Spotted, it read, Kim Heechul at the West Subway Exit in Grand Central. Look out, Upper East Siders, the Bitch is back.
Hankyung shook his head, putting his cell phone away. Gossip Girl was fast, it was like she had eyes everywhere. From now on, he knew she'd be following Heechul's every move, his every interaction with former friends and enemies, ready to dish the latest dirt on Manhattan's elite.
Hankyung hated everything about Gossip Girl and the way this society functioned - how shallow the relationships were, how people were idolized for their wealth, how they could be friends one second and enemies the next. He hadn't given Gossip Girl a second's thought in this past year, because he could care less whose heart Kim Kibum had broken, what designer's clothes Lee Sungmin was wearing, at which restaurant Choi Siwon had eaten dinner.
But now that Heechul was back, Hankyung had that sinking feeling in his heart that he would be following Gossip Girl desperately, for news on the one person he had loved from afar for four years already.
That was the closest he could ever get to being a part of his life, after all.
---
"I think you should get it," said Siwon.
"Really?" said Sungmin, looking at the shirt in his hands thoughtfully. "I don't know, I feel like it didn't fit right..."
"It fit perfectly!" Siwon insisted. "You... you look good in it."
Sungmin could feel his cheeks heating up. "Oh... well," he said with a coy smile, "If you like the way it looks on me, I suppose I'll have to get it!"
Siwon gave him a warm smile in return, pulling it out of his hands. "It's on me," he said. Sungmin opened his mouth to protest, but Siwon ignored him and went straight to the counter. Sungmin stood by his side as he paid, biting his lip all the while. Siwon was such a gentleman - it was no wonder Sungmin was attracted to him. He'd felt that way since the day they met, many years ago in primary school. Sungmin had been sulking by himself at the far end of the playground, having just gotten into a fight with his best friend, when Siwon came over, handsome even as a child, and offered Sungmin a shoulder to cry on. Sungmin had looked up with teary eyes and it was love at first sight, and Sungmin had never wanted anyone else ever since.
"Thank you," said Sungmin as he and Siwon left the store.
"Don't thank me," said Siwon with a disarming smile. "Since we're here, why don't we have lunch together?"
"Okay," said Sungmin eagerly. "The usual spot?"
"Yeah, sure," said Siwon, and just as they turned the corner, both of their cell phones went off.
"Must be another Gossip Girl post," Sungmin sighed. "Honestly, she never leaves us alone."
Siwon had stopped walking, and was looking at the text message on his phone with wide eyes.
"What?" said Sungmin laughing. "Did Kibum hook up with our headmistress or something?"
Siwon reread the message, once, twice, thrice. "Heechul," he said finally. "Heechul, he's... he's back."
One mention of his name, and Sungmin felt he couldn't breathe. He pulled out his own phone, hands shaking. Sure enough, he was back, according to Gossip Girl, and Gossip Girl was almost never wrong. Spotted... Kim Heechul... He was back, he was really back. Sungmin remembered when he and Heechul were inseparable, when they were the best of friends, when the sound of Heechul's name could only bring him joy.
Those days were a distant memory now, because Sungmin couldn't help himself - he hated Heechul, hated him for being so fucking perfect, hated him for leaving him when he needed a friend, hated him for occupying Siwon's interest, even now.
"I... I have to go," said Sungmin shakily. "Sorry, I just-"
"It's okay," said Siwon, still staring at his phone. "I'll... I'll call you. Later." He waved absentmindedly and left Sungmin on the sidewalk, holding his phone in one hand and his shopping bag in the other.
Sungmin could only watch him leave, knowing very well where he was headed - to find Heechul.
---
She was quivering under him as he moved inside her. "Ohmygod please," she whimpered, "more."
Kibum was a good guy, despite what everyone said - she wanted more and he gave it, even though he was really fucking bored.
Honestly, he had no idea who this chick was. He remembered going out last night, with a little more than just booze in his system, and then this morning he woke up, with her in his bed and no memories of how she got there.
"Kibum," she'd said as he woke up. "I had an amazing time last night."
"Yeah," said Kibum. She probably did - they always did. He was Kim Kibum, after all. She'd rolled on top of him and kissed her way down his chest, his stomach, and then-
He'd just closed his eyes. Whatever, another round couldn't hurt. But as he soon discovered, she was absolutely useless in bed. He might as well have been fucking a blow up doll.
"God, you're- amazing," she moaned.
Kibum smirked. Well, no shit, of course he was. What was her name again? He really had no idea.
He saw his phone light up somewhere next to her head. One new message from: Gossip Girl. Hmm, this ought to be interesting. He hoped it was about himself.
He flipped open his phone - she had her eyes closed and was on another plane entirely, she would never notice that his attention was elsewhere. He thrust extra hard for good measure, and she gasped.
"Kibum, I'm going to-"
Ugh, about time. Kibum couldn't believe he was the one who'd have to fake an orgasm. "Yeah, that's it baby," he said, unable to hide the indifference from his voice. His eyes scanned the message - Kim Heechul, here in Manhattan? Now, that was exciting. His eyes darkened. He and Heechul went way back, way back. Heechul had this elegance and charm about him that almost no one else in this damn city had. Heechul was also one of the few people Kibum hadn't yet been with. It was infuriating, how Heechul always seemed to slip out of his grasp - it was also a huge turn on. One day, he'd have those pretty lips wrapped around his-
The girl under him screamed as she came. Kibum winced. This bitch was so fucking loud, he couldn't hear his own thoughts. He gave a rather convincing groan, like he actually enjoyed it, and pulled out of her, grabbing his bathrobe.
"Get your things and leave," he said quietly. "I have some business to attend to." He went into his bathroom and locked the door. He pulled off the condom and jacked off to thoughts of Heechul and his pretty face. He turned on the shower when he finished, and stepped inside. He grinned as he washed his hair. Really, it was too perfect - Heechul was back. He couldn't wait to confront him about the real reason he left - he was the only one who knew, after all.
He squeezed some conditioner into the palm of his hand. He knew when he stepped out of the bathroom, he'd find his apartment empty, and that somewhere in his room, there'd be a scrap of paper with yet another girl's number on it, waiting to be crumpled and thrown far far away.
---
"You're back!" said a cheerful voice as he entered his apartment. "I hope you didn't eat, because I brought us some lunch."
Hankyung smiled as he closed his front door behind him. "Donghae, how many times do I need to tell you to stop breaking into my apartment?"
Donghae pouted from where he was standing in the living room. "I can't help it! Sometimes I just miss you too much."
Hankyung put down his bags and opened his arms as Donghae rushed forward to give him a hug.
"How was it?" said Donghae, smiling into his shoulder.
"It was great," said Hankyung truthfully. He'd spent the past two weeks in a writing workshop at Princeton. "The professors there liked my stuff, they... hope to see me there again after I graduate."
"That's wonderful," said Donghae, beaming. "I knew they'd love you. Did you write any more stories?"
"Yeah," said Hankyung, "I wrote a few..."
"Were they about... that person?"
Hankyung shifted uncomfortably. "Not... all of them were..."
Donghae laughed. "I saw the latest Gossip Girl post, by the way - I wanted to catch up on all the dirt before you came back. I'm sure you heard..."
"Of course," Hankyung sighed. "I can't believe it, but I saw him myself."
Donghae grinned. "Was he as beautiful as you described him being?"
"Even moreso," Hankyung breathed.
Donghae snickered. "Don't you ever think it's mildly creepy, how much you adore him even though he doesn't know who you are?"
Hankyung groaned. "I prefer not to think about it, really. Honestly, it's just an... innocent little crush, that's all."
"An innocent little crush that's produced - how many is it now - over three short stories already?" said Donghae cheekily.
"You little brat," said Hankyung with fake annoyance. He put his arms around Donghae and began tickling him mercilessly.
"Stop!" yelped Donghae, "Stop! This is- now way to treat your- best friend!"
"I could say the same to you, Hae," said Hankyung teasingly, as Donghae fell to the ground gasping with laughter. "As soon as I come back, you're already making fun of me re: the love of my life."
Donghae got up from the floor and dusted himself off, grinning. "I really need to see this Heechul guy for myself."
"You should come to my school," said Hankyung. "If you just-"
"God no!" said Donghae. "I'd prefer not to go anywhere near it! I'm content laughing at the Upper East Side's antics from here in Brooklyn. I really don't know how you survive in that school!"
Hankyung shrugged. "I just try not to attract attention. Only two more years and I'll be done with those people, thank God."
"Yeah," said Donghae. "With all of them," he added. He could only hope that one day Hankyung would stop seeing Heechul and start seeing only him.
---
"It's been an year," said Heechul rolling his eyes as they entered their apartment. "Surely you've gotten over it."
"You left," said his brother, Leeteuk, angrily. "You left me here, alone, and didn't write or call or anything! I thought you were never coming back."
"Yeah, well I'm here now, aren't I?"
Leeteuk sighed. "Heechul, I know we've never been that close, but you're my little brother - I care about you, I missed you."
"We're not even related," Heechul said immediately.
"You know that doesn't matter," said Leeteuk. "Now that... mom and dad are gone, we only have each other."
"I know," said Heechul softly. He stepped forward and hugged Leeteuk. "I'm sorry hyung," he said. "I missed you too, I just... I needed to get away from all this."
"It's okay," said Leeteuk, stroking his hair. "Like you said, you're here now."
Heechul smiled. He had to admit, it was good to be back.
"Though I have to ask..." said Leeteuk hesitantly. "Why did you leave?"
Heechul stiffened in Leeteuk's arms. "It's... it's complicated," he said.
"Oh," said Leeteuk. "Okay."
---
Siwon watched Heechul go into the building with his brother. He cursed under his breath. He needed to talk to Heechul alone, not with Leeteuk by his side.
This thing between them - it was so messed up. Siwon had always been attracted to Heechul, but then again... who wasn't? And he knew Heechul felt it too, for him. He could see it, in his eyes when they spoke. They'd been friends for so long, and the sparks were always there, yet Heechul never gave in... never let himself get too close.
At least, not until that night, at the end of freshman year... It was like a dream. Heechul had been drunk - of course he'd been drunk, someone always was in these long-anticipated hookups on the Upper East Side - but he knew what he was doing, who he was doing.
And then the next day he was gone, just like that.
Siwon wanted an explanation. Did Heechul leave because of him? Was he so... disgusted by the thought of being with Siwon? There were so many questions Siwon wanted answers to. So many.
He was determined to have his answers by the end of the week.
---
Sungmin sat in his bedroom, staring at the mirror. He was wearing the shirt Siwon got him - sweet, generous, adorable Siwon. No - sweet, generous, adorable, stupid Siwon. Sungmin had pride, he had loads of it, but he was more than obvious about his feelings around Siwon. He put extra effort into his appearance before going out to meet him (this usually involved at least two hours in the bathroom styling his hair just so); he wore clothes that complemented his slim, but fit body; he hung onto Siwon's arm and laughed at all the right moments. But Siwon was blind to all of it - Sungmin might as well have stripped and danced naked in front of him, and Siwon still wouldn't get it.
He never did get it - he only had eyes for one person. Sungmin was bitter, so bitter. He'd always known, even back when Heechul was fully supportive of Sungmin's pursuit of Siwon, and helped him out in every way. He'd always known, even as Heechul picked out clothes for his next encounter with Siwon, as he giggled with him afterwards as Sungmin related all their little "moments." Sungmin was good-looking, he knew that, but compared to Heechul... who could be anything compared to Heechul? Heechul was taller than Sungmin, thinner than Sungmin, funnier than Sungmin, more confident than Sungmin, more charming, more beautiful, more perfect, in every single way. Heechul could have a man wrapped around his little finger without even realizing it. He didn't mean to steal away Siwon's attention, but he did anyway.
Sungmin would always hate him for that.
"I like Siwon," Sungmin had told Heechul one day when they were thirteen years old. "I like him, a lot."
"I like him too," Heechul had said, confused.
"No - not like I do."
Heechul had understood. "Oh. Well... I'm sure he likes you back like that, Min. You'll have him in no time!"
Sungmin had believed him, had let himself believe that he and Siwon would have their happily ever after. But every time Heechul tried to tell Siwon good things about Sungmin, Siwon had only seen him. Every time Heechul waved to Sungmin and Siwon as they headed off on a 'date,' Siwon would watch after him quietly and then ask Sungmin, "Where is he going?" Even after Heechul left, all Siwon would ask was "Have you heard from Heechul?", "Do you know where Heechul went?", "Is Heechul okay?"
Finally, after three months of Heechul being gone, Siwon had seemingly moved on. He and Sungmin had gotten closer than ever. They weren't dating, no, but they were friends, good friends, and they hung out together all the time. They went to movies, out to dinner, to parties... For the first time since he was thirteen, Sungmin had thought that maybe, maybe all of this Heechul business was over - maybe Siwon would finally be his.
But of course, things were always too good to be true on the Upper East Side. Of course Heechul had to come back just as suddenly as he'd left, and turn the tables once again.
---
"Why am I not surprised to see you here?"
Siwon jumped. He turned away from the building and looked at the limousine that was pulled up next to him. Kibum was grinning at him from the backseat with the window down.
"Kibum, why are you-"
"Here, you ask?" said Kibum as he stepped out of the car. "The same reason I always am - I'm here for the entertainment." He chuckled. "Who knew our little Princess would come back so soon?"
"Hey, don't call him that," said Siwon seriously. "You know how I feel about him."
"Yeah, yeah... are you going to pick things up with him where they left off?" Kibum smirked. As he recalled, things were pretty hot where they left off.
"I... I don't know, maybe." Siwon looked at the top floor of the building wistfully. "If he lets them, anyway."
"I'm sure he will," said Kibum, patting Siwon on the back. Fat chance of that, he thought secretly. "Who could resist your charm, Siwon?"
Siwon chuckled. "Well, I'm not you, of course."
Kibum laughed. No... you're definitely not.
---
"I can't believe tomorrow's the first day of school," said Donghae cheerfully. "My, my - how time flies."
Hankyung looked at him mournfully. "Oh shut up, Mr. I-don't-have-to-go-to-school-ever-again."
Donghae shrugged. "What? That's the beauty of being a dancer! You could've joined me you know, and you wouldn't have to worry about going over to that miserable place."
Unlike Hankyung, Donghae didn't attend school, and instead pursued a career as a famous dancer. He trained tirelessly in the dance school nearby, and Hankyung thought he had lots of potential. Hankyung had been a dancer too - that's how they met in the first place - but he loved the academia too much to stay away from school.
Hankyung thought he imagined the sad look in Donghae's eyes as he spoke. You could've joined me you know... Despite how shallow and pigheaded the students of SM Academy were, he was thankful to attend the school. He was one of the only students accepted on a full scholarship - everyone else had the money to attend the school without financial aid. At SM Academy, he was an outcast, an oddball - but this school was prestigious and a high school degree with its name on it almost guaranteed success.
Up until now, Hankyung had never mingled with his classmates, had never seen them outside of class or even introduced himself to them. He was only at that school to learn, and that was it. With the exception of Heechul, he could care less about the rich snobs who went there.
Little did he know that this year, he would get to know so many of them more than he'd ever wanted to.
A/N: Hello... this is going to be an absolute beast of a fic for me to write, considering I'm only used to writing crack oneshots... so bear with me! I've never done a multichapter fic before.
If you're curious about which SJ member represents which GG character, here's a list. Keep in mind that the pairings aren't true to the TV series (i.e., there is no Chuck/Blair).Hankyung - Dan Humphrey
Kim Heechul - Serena van der Woodsen (except more Heechul-like and less flaky Serena-like)
Lee Sungmin - Blair Waldorf (except much less fierce, sorry Sungmin)
Choi Siwon - Nate Archibald (except... smart)
Kim Kibum - Chuck Bass (except no one can top Chuck Bass at being, well, Chuck Bass)
Lee Donghae - Vanessa Abrams
Park Leeteuk - LOL NO ONE, I made him up
Kim Kangin - Again, no one
As you can see, there is no Rufus/Lily. Also, other Super Junior members will eventually make appearances - keep your eyes peeled ;D
Re: Kihae, I realize they are both pretty OOC in this chapter (and so is everyone else, cries). Kibum will eventually become less of an asshole, and you'll see that Donghae is actually quite adorable!
And finally, uh... you guys are smart, so you might end up guessing eventually, so I'll just do the big reveal now. Spotted:
