First order of business: I got into Math 124! I can go in tomorrow evening to get the form signed, and then I can register for my last NSCC class. I'm registering for my other two classes tomorrow morning. Yay :).
Second order of business: Things have been going okay otherwise. My mom's mental state has deteriorated slightly in the past month or so, but other than that, life at home is okay. People still aren't picking up the slack in terms of cleaning but I'm pretty much resigned to it. And our dorky-ass car is pretty much mine now so yeah. That's life I guess?
I got really confused in Poli Sci today because we wasted most of the class talking about immigration, and I was thinking about outsourcing and such. And Mr. Trimble brought up the point that even when the corporate departments don't use the monetary gains from outsourcing to bring the price of the product down, even them spending it on a bigger yacht or something puts money into the economy and that creates jobs. And that struck me as wrong. For awhile I thought about it and I just thought I was rebelling against my rational and impartial side, a little kid going "BUT THAT'S UNFAIRRRRR". But then I started wondering if the problem was still valid, because this economy is specialized. Unless you're in unskilled labor, you're probably involved in some sort of industry exclusively. You're not suddenly going to go from working at ATT to working as a yacht builder, so while you might benefit in the long run from a healthy economy, in the short-term you're still without a job. And that was the discrepancy that was weighing on my mind, that the jobs created by money being pumped into the economy don't fill the hole that layoffs leave. In my own experience, the telecom industry especially is one huge game of musical programmers, which can be frustrating for any employee in a job search.
Unfortunately that sense of wrongness is definitely exacerbated by my own bias, the "but it's not fairrrr" response. My gut feeling is that American people should make that American product and benefit from it, but in the long run economically we do benefit from moving jobs offshore, and I do like my Coke products.
And this whole rant thing was probably really pointless. It's one of those things where you're explaining how you came to a conclusion that everyone has already come to. It seems like one would read this and go "yeah, and?". So now I feel kind of stupid. I'll leave it though, I guess. Bah.
