so the roommate has a cat. so for the past few months, "we" have had a cat. i have never had a real pet before--the concept is pretty foreign here in Bangladesh, where i spent my childhood, and to my family, so no pets in America either. but my friends have had them, so over the years, i've gone from being sort of afraid, to tolerant, to now, when i am saving bones from my meals and giving hour-long head-scritches. i have not committed to cleaning the litter box, but am generally good for anything else.
so yeah, am cool with this whole cat thing as long as the cat doesn't get hair all over my things (which i avoid by keeping the door to my bedroom closed so she can't get in there and not wearing the sweatshirt she likes to cuddle in to bed, yes, i know i'm ocd, i'm okay with that) and stays out of my food when i'm eating it. (she eats anything. seriously. the other day, she was eating my carrots, which, i hate carrots, but i don't think cats can even digest carrots, so.)
anyway, Di (roommate) has had her since she was a kitten, and we live on the 4th floor so she's never really been outside except for when we hang out on the roof. a little while ago, she went into heat. now, my best friend when i was younger would always be talking to her cat when we were on the phone and i remember her saying stuff about it being in heat, and i watched that Friends episode where Ross's monkey humps his leg, and that's the extent of my real life experience with animals being in heat.
luckily for me, kitcat didn't fulfill any of those expectations. she just sort of yowled a little and turned over anytime i came around and was very sensitive to being touched. all things i can handle. so far so good.
...and then she got outside. i don't even remember how it happened. one minute i'm on the comp waving Di off to wherever she was going, the next minute i am alone in the house and there is no cat to be heard or seen. we looked around a bit but the consensus is that she was probably going to go around, get laid, and then come home. everyone seemed very calm about this. (except for me. i've never had a pet before, but i remember one time ruthie's cat left and then it never came back and this is not America, most cats are strays. no one's gonna see it and think "oh a pet, let's return it!" andsoyes.) so yesterday on the way back from work, i heard a phantom-familiar meow and went off to look around the back of the building even though i figured i was just imagining it. and lo and behold, it was the cat. i wasn't sure if she had missed me, but i grabbed her up before she had a chance to think about running away and brought her back. there was much rejoicing by all as roommate and i sat on the couch and watched her sniff around the room indulgently.
and then i looked down and saw that my shirt was dirty and so was cat and so decided the cat needed a bath. we were too busy to do it last night, but it's the weekend now, so i took some of Di's lavender scented bodywash and plopped cat down into the sink and she was actually much more cooperative than i would've thought. until i put the soap on her, at which point she yowled and clawed into my shoulder and hid her face in my neck. Di had to come and help hold her while i rinsed her off.
but now! cat is clean. and smelling of lavender. and licking self in a disgruntled manner as the toweling was not really enough to dry her off and i was afraid to use the hair-dryer.
