Room 524, Monday Afternoon

Jun 04, 2012 12:09

Billy had always been a fan of low-key birthdays - a little cake, some presents, and that was about it. He'd only had one class today, so now he had all afternoon to do whatever he wanted to celebrate being sixteen. His parents had come through with a bunch of different gift cards, since it was easier for him to pick out what kind of geeky things ( Read more... )

Well. After Billy had come by to celebrate Topher's own birthday last month, Topher could hardly have let Billy's go by without acknowledging it. Especially since now they were in kissing territory, and that seemed to entail some degree of birthday-celebration. Just going by what he'd seen in movies, of course.

So here he was, holding what looked like a metal box of sorts to his chest when he came to knock on the door.

"Hey! Happy birthday."

Billy looked up from a page full of gadgets and grinned at Topher. "Hey! I, uh, I wasn't sure if you'd remember," he said sheepishly. "Come in."

"I set phone reminders," Topher admitted, stepping inside. "Just in case some kind of crisis or something came up and I got distracted."

So dedicated, Topher.

"So... fun day so far?"

"I survived another relationship class, and I don't have anything else to do today," Billy said, laughing. "And there's no crisis and Tony's back. So, yeah."

"Awesome," Topher said, grinning. "Um. I got you something?"

Billy probably hadn't thought that you were just carrying that box around for fun, Topher.

"Here," he said, thrusting it out in Billy's direction.

And it was... a metal box, with buttons on the top that could expand a few different drawers: one containing first-aid stuff like band-aids and bacta patches, one stocked with snacks and energy bars, and one extra one that was empty.

Oh, and there was an outlet on the bottom.

Topher really needed to get a life.

"It's sort of a... superhero survival kit," he added anxiously after handing it over. "I know you can probably magic yourself any of that stuff anyway, but it won't hurt to have them on hand just in case, you know? And it's collapsible if you hit that button, so you can carry it around."

Billy took the box and opened the drawers, looking more excited the more he poked around and saw what was inside. "Oh wow. This is awesome. I...I'm trying to be better about only using my magic when I have to, so this is perfect." He collapsed the box and kind of held it to his chest, grinning. "Thank you. It seems wrong to say I hopefully won't need it, but...well, I know better than to think that I won't."

Topher did his best to keep from flailing around with excitement that Billy liked it. Look, this had taken a lot of work, okay? Just shut up.

Instead of flailing, he just stuck with beaming.

"No, I know what you mean," he assured Billy. "Hopefully all your superheroing will be totally safe and you won't need it, but if you're at all like Tony... um, it'll be good to have just in case."

Smooth.

"I don't know if I could ever be quite as daring as Tony. And I wouldn't go into something dangerous without backup for now," Billy said. "Where'd you find all this stuff?"

"The band-aids and food and stuff are from that convenience store in town," Topher explained. "And these patch things, I handwavily bought a bunch of when I went to Ender and Ben's place in Ben's galaxy. They help with healing and stuff."

Beat.

"And the rest of the box I pretty much made."

"Oh." Somehow, that last part hadn't quite occurred to Billy, and he looked even happier. "I don't think I've ever had someone make something for my birthday. I mean, my brothers make me silly cards sometimes, but that doesn't count."

"Oh, it was... kinda easy," Topher said, ducking his head a little. "Just some welding. You know." Right, Topher, because that was what everyone did for birthday presents. "I didn't know you had brothers."

"Oh, yeah, just a little welding, no big deal." Billy snickered, playing with the buttons on the box some more. "Yeah, they're younger and annoying and I don't miss them at all. Except maybe a tiny bit."

PLUS A HOT TWIN. Way to not know about the hot twin yet, Billy.

"I think siblings are like that sometimes," Topher offered. "Not that I have any. But in movies they're always really annoying but secretly like each other. You know." Beat. "Though they should totally be making you cooler things than just cards."

NO TWIN FANTASIES YET, TOPHER, SORRY.

"Well, they're not quite as dorky as I am. They're pretty normal." He couldn't help but make that sound like a negative thing. "I think building stuff out of Legos might be their limit at the moment."

"Oh, lame," Topher pronounced. "Dorkiness or GTFO."

Topher, you giant nerd.

"Not that Legos aren't awesome. I have about a billion Space Battles Lego sets at home. But still."

"Somehow, that doesn't surprise me," Billy said, shifting on the bed so there was room for Topher next to where he was sitting. "Those are cool though. And you got to have them all to yourself, and never had to share. Being an only child must be kind of awesome."
