"What you fear is true is true"

So the Houston Chronicle is publishing a five-part series, "In Harm's Way", based on the six-month investigation that I heard about at our Community Advisory Council meeting and that I noted several weeks ago in this blog.

It's all over the news and the papers now. Everyone knows now that the entire area east of Houston can generate from 29 to 199 additional cases of cancer (out of 1,000,000) in a lifetime (70 years).

Houston mayor Bill White: "These polluters don't own the air. They have no right to endanger the lives of citizens downwind."

Duh. If you think that your all-nighters are harming your health, well, they are. And if you think that urban living is bad for you, well, you're probably right about that, too. If you suspect that your significant other is cheating on you, or that your hairstyle isn't quite hip, you guessed it: You're probably right. Generally, "what you fear is true is true".

These reports will influence my med school decision.

(Hmm, does the formaldehyde explain why the 93-year-old husband and wife (she's 3 months older) a few streets away are so, ahem, well-preserved? Or why I've never had tooth decay? Hmm, maybe I should contact Ray Bradbury... ;) )
