She’d dealt with Stacy.

More importantly, she could cope with Stacy.

If he wanted to date a woman she’d been friends with in College that was his prerogative. She’d dealt with his leg, his addiction, his attitude. But secrecy was not something she was used to from him. If there was one thing she was certain of… Gregory House liked to rub it in.

“I need to know what’s going on,” She was close to pleading with Wilson as they sat in his office. Lisa Cuddy never pleaded for anything.

“If he doesn’t want to tell you…”

“I’m his wife!”

--

He turned to leave and she stopped him. There was something missing in the tone of her voice. As if something in her had died, leaving only a memory of the woman she once was.

“Divorce papers,” She didn’t look up. The file slid across the desk towards him, and she waited for him to pick them up.

“Separated eight years, not fun any more?” He asked playfully, but she was not amused.

“When you keep something from me, I still worry like a wife should…” She told him. “You are driving me insane.”

So he explained.

It was cancer.

--

It wasn’t a conscious decision to avoid him. It just sort of happened. Work was taken to his office and then she’d just disappear again, in a desperate attempt to stay focused. But when he walked into her office she was trapped, feeling like a caged animal about to be poked and prodded with a long stick. He began talking, while she drifted in and out of the conversation.

“…it’s next week.”

“…the operation?” She repeated, making sure they were still on the same line. He silently confirmed. “You really shouldn’t be here.” Her soft voice breaking as she spoke.

--

“If I asked you to cancel…” She stood in his doorway, soaked to the bone. His watch told him it was two in the morning. For once she had woken him up at some ungodly hour.

“Why would you do that?” He asked quietly.

“Because,” They stared at each other for a long time. ‘Because’ was not an answer to anything, and she knew it. “They’ll be digging around in your brain. One wrong move and you come out of there a different person.”

“So you’re saying…”

“I don’t want to lose my husband.” Tears formed, streaking her rain-soaked cheeks.

--

“Promise me,” She whispered against his ear as he waited to be wheeled away. “No more games.”

“I think of something to make you miserable…”

“You win,” Rather than fill him with happiness, her words were painful to hear. “I am miserable without you Greg, and I can’t think of a way to make it worse for you.”

He reached out and touched her cheek, running his thumb over her lips. “You think too much,” He muttered. “If you had wanted to win, you wouldn’t be here.”

“I’m not going anywhere,” She promised as he was wheeled away. “You win.”
