Title: The Magic Is Lost
Disclaimer: The West Wing, and its characters, don’t belong to me. Which kind of sucks, but I’m dealing with it.
Character: Jed Bartlet
Word Count: 358
Rating: PG
Summary: After everyone has gone their own way Jed deals with his illness.

A/N: Title comes from the song “You Had A Bad Day” by Daniel Powter. I'm not sure how it is that this was never posted here, but here it is now.

Seeing the leaves around him, there was a beauty to it all - a beauty to being alone for the first time in years. But as he moved to lean against a nearby tree, he began to notice his hands shaking. It all became too clear again and he leaned heavily on his cane, turning to face the house.

“Liz was just on the phone,” Abbey called out from the porch. She watched him carefully. She was always watching him, and the thing that annoyed him the most was that he knew she did. “She’ll be here soon with Annie. I told you Annie was staying with us for a while didn’t I?”

No she hadn’t, but what did it matter? Abbey had run of the house, as she always did. So what did it matter if she’d told him or not? Ultimately she made the decisions and he just followed suit. But it was too much.

It was too much to just hide away and let his body deteriorate. There was no way of fighting it, and nothing else to fight for. The family he’d known for so many years were spread far and wide across the country. His own children, and those he thought of as children, coming and going as they please while he drifted along.

“Jed?” Abbey called out after a while, worried that he seemed to be lost to her - in more ways than one.

“Damn it, I heard you Abigail!” He yelled across the lawn, smacking his cane against the tree.

A moment passed before she shook her head and went inside again, leaving him alone. Which he was, whether she was there or not, and she just couldn’t admit to it. He was falling to pieces.

Knowing he had no right to be angry with her, he calmed himself down and began his slow trek back to the house. The leaves seemed to lose their beauty as they flew around, in an effort to escape the darkness that surrounded him. Those that didn’t crunched helplessly beneath his feet. Breaking the illusion that there were still things he really could enjoy.
