Amy awoke with a start as she was kicked violently in the leg. “Josh?” She shook his shoulder, taking note of the clammy feel to his skin. “Josh!” Her voice almost echoed throughout the room. His eyes snapped open, and he caught his breath while Amy turned the lamp on.
“They were all gone.” He whispered, unable to stop his voice from breaking.
“What happened Josh?” She helped him sit up and pulled the bed sheets up around them both. “Talk to me, it always helps to talk.”
“CJ, Toby, Sam, President Bartlet…” He began, shock and fear halting his words. “They were in the Briefing room playing cards. He had a gun…”
“Who had a gun?” She asked gently, holding his hand as he spoke.
“I don’t know, but he was outside the window with a gun. And he shot them… he shot them all in front of my eyes.” His entire body shook as he recalled the vivid images. “First CJ, because he knew how much it would hurt us all to watch her die. And it did, she was screaming in pain and there was nothing we could do because he kept shooting. One by one he shot them all, and then…” Silence filled the room, a cold, dark silence that forever lingered around the topic of safety and security for the White House staff.
“What happened Josh?”
“I turned to run. I wanted to warn the others, get help, tell them to crash the White House. But I hit a fence. I was suddenly outside, and I was trapped.” Josh paused, rubbing his eyes as they began to water. Memories flooded back. Memories of cameras, screams, guns. “I was back at Rosslyn, and they were all dead.”
