(no subject)
Every so often, lately, I hear these harrowing screams and mangled sobs coming from behind my kitchen wall, from the woman living in the apartment next to mine. It starts off as a sort of muted snuffling, then quickly escalates into full-fledged shrieking that usually goes on for about an hour. I can make out a few words and broken phrases: PLEASE NO, I DON'T WANT TO, and especially just the word PLEASE, repeated over and over again.
This is what I think might be going on next door to me:
At least, that is the first theory that sprang into my head. I also have several alternate theories:
- She is indulging her boyfriend's twisted rape fantasies. However, I never hear a man's voice, or anything that might be construed as sex noises.
- She is practicing some flaky new age form of therapy that involves screaming to get back in touch with her primal animal emotions.
- She is a psychiatric patient with a live-in nurse who has to periodically restrain her in order to inject her with her drugs.
- She is heartbroken and wants the whole building to know it.
- She cuts herself, and screams while doing so.
At this point I favor the Nazi torture / Dennis Hopper theory. I have this vague sense that our Common Humanity requires something of me in these kinds of circumstances - something along the lines of kicking down my neighbor's door, and shouting ALL RIGHT WHERE ARE YOU KEEPING HER YOU BASTARDS as I rush inside.
I will consult with the Sage of my building on this matter - he has been living here for nearly a quarter-century, and yet he is such an Ascetic and such a Holy Man that he voluntarily chooses to live out of the innumerable cardboard boxes that litter his apartment. He will know what to do...
