Pushing the button

Something I've been wondering for a while:

Oftentimes, I will come to a crosswalk where you push a button to activate the walk signal. No matter how many people are already waiting at the light, newcomers will always push the button.

-If the newcomers see someone pushing the button ahead of them... they push it anyway. WHY?
-If the newcomers do not see someone pushing the button, do they really assume someone out of the 5+ people already waiting to cross did not push the button already?
-Why in the world do some people push the button over and over again? Do they really not realize that only the first button push really does anything? Do they not realize that some of the buttons (especially in NYC, I've heard) are not even hooked up to anything?

Not a serious issue by any means, but I do see it happen over and over again. :P
