History:
From the Aselia Wiki.Personality: Cold, stoic, ruthless - these are some of the first impressions people get of Tear when they first meet her even though she's so young. Being the younger sister of Van Grants and living in the Qliphoth both had an impact on her, since Major Legretta often came down to teach her personally instead of her having to go up to Daath. This often resulted in being bullied by others for getting special treatment, simply because she was related to Van. She was led to believe that she had to become someone worthy enough to fight at her brother's side, and she strove to do just that. Yet when she discovered Van's true plans for Auldrant, she was horrified enough by the idea that she gathered the resolve to take on a personal mission to assassinate him, displaying just how selfless she can be and just how dedicated she is to her only family, since she refused to lose him to such a cause. However, she also intended to take her own life after taking Van's, and though she later learns to value her own life she is still rather reckless, and does still have the desire to give up her life for the greater good. This shows how hypocritical she can be in that aspect, since she often argued with Luke about his desire to give up his own life for the sake of clearing the miasma coating Auldrant. She is not afraid to get hurt for the sake of others.
She is also brutally honest, though if she realizes just how hurtful a remark of hers was she won't hesitate to apologize for it. This isn't to say that she doesn't have emotions. Though it takes some time, Tear can be surprisingly kind and thoughtful, though she has difficulty expressing emotions because of her soldier upbringing, and she'll be happy to explain things to people if they need it, displaying her patience. Thanks to Luke's influence though, she has been able to open up more and more. There are some instances in the game where Tear displays a rather maternal side of her personality, offering advice to Anise and Natalia. Suzanne even calls her a big sister to Luke since she looked after him so much. Her sense of duty is strong, but not so strong that she refuses to look at things from another's perspective. This is displayed early in the game when she continuously defends Mohs against the party's accusations until she is provided with enough evidence that what he is doing is wrong and hurting countless people.
She has a soft spot for cute things (like Mieu), which is often played for laughs in-game. This girl is just a strong person overall, able to endure all the things thrown at her and rise up stronger than before.
Strengths:
Tear is an excellent group healer, and being a descendent of Yulia Jue she is gifted with using all seven Fonic Hymns with almost relative with ease. The first Fonic Hymn in particular is one she uses often because of its ability to put those within hearing range to sleep. Her main weapons are a staff and throwing knives, which she has fairly accurate aim with when thrown, and the few attack spells she has tend to be light-oriented. Her advantage in battle tends to be speed rather than strength. As for how she is mentally, Tear is rather knowledgeable of the Qliphoth, having been born there, and of the Outer Lands, though to a lesser extent. Emotionally she is calm and patient, and as a soldier she is able to reel in her emotions quite well if she feels the situation calls for it. She also tends to be stubborn, though not so much that she'll let it stand in her way. Overall she's a very strong character, being a valuable asset to the group both in battle and as someone to talk to when things get rough.
She is also a very good cook. >_>
Weaknesses:
Tear is a dainty 162 cm and 50 kg, making it very easy to knock her around in battle, and doesn't really have much when it comes to brute strength, usually relying on her hymns for combat. Sometimes her stubbornness can be dangerous, as is seen when she refused to let her companions stop her from helping Luke open the passage rings because it was making her so ill, to the point that it seemed death was eminent. Despite her soldier demeanor, Tear is still a teenager, and a confused one at that. She does feel conflicted sometimes when it comes to her brother, and her loyalty does at times get the better of her. There is also her recklessness, and when this is paired up with her emotions it can make for a dangerous combination, as evidenced when she ran after Luke up in the Tower of Rem in an attempt to stop him from sacrificing himself. She also does the other extreme, however, meaning that she will keep her emotions bottled up most of the time, believing them to be a burden sometimes. Overall, she still has trouble expressing what she really feels, though she is trying.
Samples
First Person:
1. If you had to choose between obeying the person you respect and saving the person you love, which would you choose? Why?
… I've already had to make this decision before, with my brother. He is both someone I care for and respect, but he lost that respect when I discovered his plans for Auldrant. In the end I have chosen to save the ones I care for, though I still hold hope that he may be brought to his senses… Even though that is highly unlikely.
2. Who is the most important person in your life, and why?
My brother is still dear to me, but I've come to value my friends just as much, Luke in particular… I'm sorry, but I don't really have an answer for you at this time.
3. How do you think you perform in a crisis?
I manage to remain calm when it comes to these situations, though I will admit that there are times when I allow my emotions to get the better of me.
4. What do you think about killing? Is it necessary, abhorrent, entertaining? Do you/would you kill if necessary?
As a soldier, it is expected that at I times I must kill. While it is not something I enjoy, I realize that there are situations where it is necessary. After all… I was willing to kill my own brother to keep him from his twisted ideals, and my own if necessary. But after the incident at the Tower of Rem, and what almost happened to Luke… I'm not as sure as I was before.
5. Share your most beloved memory.
My most beloved memory… Before I would have said when my brother came down from the Outer Lands to be with me, but I've gained many more in the past year traveling with this group. I don't particularly favor one over the other, because I've come to value them all.
Third Person:
It had only been last night when she had talked to Luke aboard the Albiore, and she knew for a fact that they had all slept inside of it. So why would she be out in the forest? She knew she didn't sleepwalk, nor did she remember actually leaving the airship right after the conversation. By all means, she should be warm in bed, filled with anxiety about the task that lay ahead of them, not wandering about in a forest and filled with confusion as to where she was. There was also the situation of her clothes. She knew for a fact that she did not carry an outfit as simple as this, and even if she did she would have still strapped some of her trusty knives to her legs, yet even those were gone. It left her feeling more frustrated than anything. What poor soldier behavior that was, exploring an area she hardly knew without any means of defending herself. Of course, there were her hymns... And this book she was carrying. She had been startled when she opened it and found voices speaking from it, all relaying different messages. But from the looks of things, she wasn't the only one confused about the whole situation.
At last her blue eyes fell on a break in the trees, and she walked faster toward it. She could spot what looked like a fountain not far in front of it, as well as people. She would have to ask them what was going, especially those that she recognized from the journal. She let out a soft huff, then pushed a branch that would have otherwise hit her in the face. Too bad she had briefly forgotten the wings now attached to her back.
"Ow!" The cry had slipped past before she could detain it, and she frowned. She didn't know what to do about the wings still, even though she had spent quite a while gawking at them. Of all the things that had happened since she woke up, these wings had been the biggest surprise. But Tear was determined to push this all aside for the time being, there were more important things to worry about. Finding Luke, for one. She truly hoped he was okay, wherever he was. After all, they still had to face Van...
