The Pope and condoms!

Mar 17, 2009 22:16

Once again the Pope has outraged the secular media by claiming that faithfulness and chastity is a more reliable method of avoiding HIV/AIDS than shagging HIV+ prostitutes while wearing a condom. From the media reaction, it's obvious that they thought the Pope's visit to Africa was to provide a platform for him to declare that the Church is changing its teaching from 'no sex outside of marriage' to 'hey, stick it anywhere; it's not a sin if you're wearing a rubber'. Oddly enough it didn't happen.

However, between you and me, I think the media were prepared for this eventuality because they've come up with a remarkable number of quotes from opponents of the Church's teaching. Interestly, I have yet to encounter any opponent who is using statistics to back his argument. In the absence of statistical proof you might almost be forgiven for concluding that african countries where larger proportions of the population practice Islam and the more conservative forms of Christianity have lower rates of HIV/AIDS than the more secular nations.
