[Poem] Standing Still

Title: Standing Still
Poet: Umi-chii
Prompt: Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan
A/N: Written under a favor of a cousin for her English assignment. This one is a take on what a Chinese feels when faced with the Western world, something that I always have a love-hate relationship with. Edited it a bit to be used as an entry for the school's 2008-2009 English Poetry Contest.

Standing Still

I stood aimlessly in this crowd,
My place here covered by a shroud.
I have never been frown by the likes of you,
But I’ll still take it as my cue.

Stereotyped we have been seen as,
Yet don’t forget it’s not by us.
Take pride in our rich culture
For this will pave our future.

Walk forward; don’t dare to look back.
We have to strive for what we lack.
Not everyone comprehends feats
We practice, but bear no regrets.

What we need is a stronger hold
Of ourselves so we won’t fold
To the ways of the outside world.
This is how we can live unfurled.
