I use Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.10A, and what I do is duplicate the base and set it to Soft Light, and then make a new layer, with which I'll do 'Color' and that stuff.

For the Karin picture, I had seperate layers for the speech bubbles, the flowers and dark pink-purple skirt, her legs, and the crown, set, respectively, to Screen, Hard Light, Hard Light, Color, and Screen.

wow. cool thanks. i was getting impatient with coloring the manga scans that i'm ready to give up. you saved me! ok, exaggeration on that last part, but really this is truly helpful.
