Dear Yuletide Author,
You've signed up to write for one of my beloved teeny fandoms so that already makes me adore you and utter little squeaky happy noises :-D Thank you!
I'm not hard to please, I don't think. Although I have a shippy little heart, I'm also more than happy with fic focussing on friendship instead of shippiness if that's not your thing. Write the story you love and I'll love it too. That said, if you're a romance writer then I prefer F/F or M/M rather than het in my shippy fic, which is probably obvious from the character combinations I requested but it's always worth making clear.
General likes and loves
- Happy or hopeful endings. I really don't want to be crying into my Christmas pudding so no death fics and no eternally alone and unhappy endings. I'm a sucker for fics that leave me smiling and feeling good about life and my fandoms.
- Explorations of friendship and love. In all forms. Friends to lovers, epic friendship, epic love, quietly maturing love, slow builds, pining and its resolution, friends as found family...whether a relationship is romantic or not, I'm a big fan of relationships based in friendship.
- Tropes. I have an embarrassingly intense love for the tropes: all the AUs (really, ALL OF THEM), soulbonds, telepathy, amnesia, huddle for warmth, cabin fic, road trips, fake relationship, rivals to lovers...you can't go wrong with tropes for me.
- Or subverting the tropes, that will also get me happy, particularly if it's subverting some of the more problematic tropes (sex pollen subversion etc.)
- Not all of my fandoms lend themselves well to AUs, but I love AUs for the ones that do if that's your thing. If that wasn't clear from the earlier point :-D
- Any rating is great, but I do like some plot in my porn if that's your direction. PWPs don't do much for me unless it's the kind with lots of banter and affection and sex that doesn't go perfectly but is still good for everyone.
- Plotty goodness casefic is always a winner for me as well.
- Humour. Deep and dark fic is cool, but deep and funny or fluffy and funny or just some great bantery humour are more my level.
- If you're a romance writer and you're doing a slow build, I'm a complete sucker for the big gorgeously desperate kiss-after-revealing-shared-feelings trope. Go wild on that if you want to :-D
- Plotty goodness casefic with humour and kissing and porn is probably too much to ask for, but it's basically my ideal fic :-D
General dislikes
- Character death. Please, please, no. See note on not crying into my Christmas pudding.
- Torture, graphic violence, rape, BDSM, gore, scat, watersports...nope.
- Shopping fics. An entire fic about an IKEA date will probably make me glaze over, unless IKEA is invaded by aliens and the characters have to fight them off with standard lamps and Billy bookcases while bantering and enjoying celebratory kisses. (Note: huh, that could be a fun prompt :-D)
And so, to specific fandom by fandom notes that will hopefully be shorter than the general section :-D (Edit: *sigh* Nope!)
Captain Marvel (Marvel): Carol Danvers, Jessica Drew
While I'd love some femslash here, I'm equally happy with friendship fic. I've just loved their friendship in the CM books and the feeling that this is the one long relationship that they both need in their lives. The events of Enemy Within have, obviously, been both heart-breaking and fascinating so an exploration of how it affects their friendship would be great. Or a pre-Enemy Within fic with all the banter and teasing and dinosaur punching you want. Alternatively, this is a fandom where I'm always up for an AU. More detailed prompts and general fic preferences are in my Yuletide letter.
I really love Carol and Jess's friendship here. Pre-Enemy Within, I love the teasing and bantering between them and that sense that they're each other's soul mate and the person they can go home to when everything else has gone wrong around them. Jessica's sense of humour and the hilarious faces she pulls when Carol is doing crazy stuff are what really drew me to the characters. They support each other through their bad choices and there's always this sense that there's nothing they can't come back from if they're together. Fics exploring that relationship with banter and teasing and adventures would be amazing. If it helps, my favourite CM panel so far is Carol punching out a dinosaur. It's beautiful.
If you're writing post-Enemy Within, I'd love to see fics exploring how they work their way back to each other. How Jessica rebuilds the friendship Carol has forgotten. If they were in an existing relationship, how that works (hey, amnesia trope!) and how they rebuild it. If you want to write a get together via amnesia fic, go crazy.
This is one of the fandoms that I also love AUs for: coffee shop, college, teachers, urban fantasy, futurefic...wherever your imagination takes you as long as the relationship between Carol and Jess is the core.
Fearless Defenders (Comics): Annabelle Riggs, Brunnhilde | Valkyrie
I'd genuinely prefer femslash for this pairing because the canon is so fantastic for it, but if you're not a slasher then gen friendship would be A-OK. Annabelle is such a great character and she plays off Valkyrie so well. Initially she's just the feisty and brilliant archaeologist who doesn't do the fighting (and kisses Val, which I completely understand) but she's grown so much. The shared bodies thing is bringing up so many fascinating dynamics and I'd love a fic about how that's affecting Annabelle and Val's relationship. Alternatively, something written for the beautiful Indiana Jones-esque cover solicit that's been going around would be amazing. More detailed prompts (and a link to that cover solicit) and general fic preferences are in my Yuletide letter.
This is the series that just keeps giving for me. In the first few issues, I had the beautiful lesbian archaeologist in love/lust with the gorgeous Norse heroine. Then there was the tragic sacrifice to save each other and life beyond the grave. And now they're sharing a body, which is turning out to be rife for possibilities and complications. If you want to write something set in the early issues with Annabelle and Valkyrie being amazing kickass women who sometimes kiss and are figuring out what that means, go for it.
If you want to write something about the whole shared bodies thing, exploring how it works and what kind of communication they can have, I'll love it. Shippy or not shippy, you'll make me happy. If you want to bring in Misty Knight or any of the other wonderful FD women, feel free.
If you want to write something based on
this amazing cover solicit, you'd probably make my Yuletide. Particularly if you manage to make it funny and sweet and Valkyire is highly unamused with her outfit :-D I love the role subversion implied in that cover and I'd love an exploration of that.
This is a fandom where I'm not sure whether an AU would work, but I'm happy to give it a go if something fun occurs to you. An Indian Jones fusion based on that cover solicit? Might just blow my mind.
Young Avengers: America Chavez, Kate Bishop
I'm quietly hoping for femslash for this pairing, but I'd be very happy with gen friendship if that's not your thing. A fun adventure fic or a quiet fic about the times they didn't end up in a horrible dimension during their dimension-hopping would both be great. I love AUs so if you've got a rivals-to-lovers sports AU lurking in your mind, lay it on me. Kate and America are my favourite characters from the new YA run and I just want more about them. More detailed prompts and general fic preferences are in my Yuletide letter.
I haven't read the first run (yet) so I'd really prefer fic based on the current run because I'll be more familiar with it. America and Kate are my favourite characters from the series and I'll basically love anything based on these two, ship or friendship.
Exploring all the points between what we're seeing on the page - all the realities they visited in the Instagram panel or the quieter resting moments between realities - would be amazing for me. There are so many places to slip in extra scenes and adventures for them. Building their friendship through all the dimension hopping would be amazing.
Alternatively, go wild with tropes or write a complete AU and I'll probably shower you with praise.
If you're going in a ship direction (I definitely ship them), I'm not keen on partner betrayal or bashing characters just to end a relationship. So a dignified, sensible reason for why Kate isn't with Noh-Varr anymore would be much appreciated if you're writing something set in established the YA-verse.
Exploring their differences and how they compliment each other would be fantastic. America's response to most things seems to be punching problems until they stop being problems while Kate tries to look at problems more carefully. America's simmering anger contrasts so much with Kate's joy in life. There's such potential for a slowly building friendship or love and also potential for sudden explosive *something* that develops into a deeper relationship after the big spark. This is one fandom where an AU with a rivals-to-lovers plot would really work, I think. I keep seeing people talking about writing softball or football (soccer) AUs with rivals-to-lovers themes and then they never appear, to my eternal sadness.
Parasol Protectorate - Gail Carriger: Biffy, Professor Lyall
Really, my biggest want here is more Lyall and Biffy. We got some lovely writing for them on the page, but I really wanted to see more about their relationship and how it grew and where it went after the books ended. I'm just greedy about these two. More detailed prompts and general fic preferences are in my Yuletide letter.
This is one fandom where I really adore one of the canonical ships. I was shipping them before we got anything on page so I did a happy dance when they finally got together. A happy, happy dance. They're so different on the surface and match together so well when you look beneath that. Biffy was such a beautifully silly character in the earliest book and he grew into an amazing character who isn't what he *wanted* to be but is learning to accept and enjoy what he actually is. Lyall always had depth and shading from the beginning, but learning about his background and his capacity for loving someone despite everything was a revelation.
My eternal frustration is that we haven't got an entire book devoted to Biffy and Lyall and their relationship. I want to know more. That's my biggest wish. More background on what they were feeling and how their relationship grew into what we saw on the page. More quietly loving moments between them. More about their future and how they maintain a relationship with all their other obligations.
If it's long and plotty or short and adorable, I just want more about these characters. This is one of the fandoms where an AU really isn't something I'm looking for, but if you want to play around with a trope to explore their relationship further then go right ahead.
Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011): Benji Dunn, William Brandt
I'm definitely a slasher for these two, but I'm also just in love with their bantery teasing friendship so don't feel like you *have* to go there for me. I fell for them during the planning session in the plane because they're so different and work together so well. Post-IM4 fic would be great, anything that has a bit of action and some fun banter between them. Or if you're a slasher and love tropes as much as I do, go wild on them. More detailed prompts and general fic preferences are in my Yuletide letter.
Benji and Brandt are, on the surface, such diametrically different characters and yet they work so well together in the film. I would love to have a fic that explores the differences between them and the things that connect them and how that turns into friendship (or more). The scene in the aircraft where they're discussing the magnetic suit and Benji keeps glossing over the 20ft jump (and Brandt's "WTF, I have to jump and your tech is all that stands between me and a messy death AND IT DOESN'T ALWAYS WORK" face) is my favourite thing about the film. Closely followed by the actual scene inside the computery thing and the jump and the malfunctioning tech. Just as a guideline for what I love about their relationship and their missions together.
Post-MI4 fic would be amazing. Comedy of errors casefic or between missions everyday spies fic or just Benji and Brandt being awesome bros would all make me happy. Any of that with an added sweetly adorable (or hilariously incompetent) romance would be fantastic.
I haven't seen many AUs for this fandom/pairing, but if you've got an idea then you should absolutely go for it. Really, anything that continues the friendship we saw in the film and develops it - romantically or to a deeper friendship - with elements of humour and Things Not Going To Plan (TM) would be perfect.
If you're a slasher and you want to play with some slashy tropes, this pairing is pretty much built for them: Undercover boyfriends! Cabinfic! Sharing a bed! Huddling for warmth! And a few more that I'm sure I missed! Go wild :-D
Call the Midwife: Cynthia Miller, Trixie Franklin
The friendship between Cynthia and Trixie is one of the highlights of the series for me. It shouldn't work because they're such different people and yet it does. Anything exploring that - how they met and became friends, how their friendship developed - would be lovely. As would a casefic highlighting how their differences compliment each other. If you're a femslasher, I'd also love a shippy fic about them but really, I just want any kind of fic because there isn't any. More detailed prompts and general fic preferences are in my Yuletide letter.
The theme with a lot of my requests is characters who are different on the surface and yet have an intense and beautiful friendship. Trixie and Cynthia couldn't epitomise this more. Cynthia is so quiet and appears so shy, Trixie is loud and appears so confident. Yet there's so much more going on underneath.
Cynthia is incredibly strong and determined over things that matter and she's giggly and gregarious with the right people. She'll try new things, even if they scare her, and her quietness is only relative because everyone around her is so much louder.
Trixie is confident about certain things - sometimes too confident - and uses that to mask her insecurities. She knows that she's beautiful, but she seems surprised when people like her for anything else. She's oddly brittle at times, as though the personality she shows to the world is something she clings to and might shatter under the wrong forces.
It always seems like Cynthia is the only one who gets to see under Trixie's glamorous mask and Trixie is the first one to see the deeper emotions that Cynthia feels underneath her quietly impassive shell. I'd love anything that explores that, particularly something that explores how they grew into their friendship before Jenny and co. arrived at Nonnatus House. By the time we see them, their friendship is strongly established and I'd love a fic about that background.
Alternatively I'd love something about the cases they work together that we don't see and how their connection gets them through some of the more difficult moments of being a midwife in Poplar.
If you're a shipper, a friendship to lovers story would be perfect for them. Would Cynthia be holding a quiet torch for Trixie, or is Trixie's brittle, determinedly shallow exterior masking her feelings for Cynthia? (Both, my heart says, but yours might not.) I'd rather not be left with an eternally pining, never requited love here, but it's not a time period where a big romantic gesture with everyone nodding approvingly would work. A private, romantically sweet secret relationship is my headcanon for these two.
I hope this enormous essay gives you somewhere to start with the fandom you've matched to me on and I look forward to unwrapping my fic on Christmas Day!
