Christmas appears to be on its way

Well, I made it through a little over an hour today before I started taking walks around the floor, trying to ease some of the pain in my back. Argh. It looks like I'm going to be working in ten minute bursts between floor circuits today, which is neither productive or fun. As you may guess, the back is not getting better.

I've brought my TENS machine in today, to see whether fifteen minutes on that combined with a heat pad every couple of hours will at least give me more time at my desk.

I saw the physio on Tuesday and he confirmed what I knew, that I have inflammation in the sacroiliac joint again, and started teaching me some core stability exercises. They're remarkably familiar...

He did do something different from the previous three physios. After the extraordinarily painful examination, he popped a heat bad and a TENS machine on me for a few minutes to get my pain under control better before starting me on the exercises. Helping with the pain seems to be important to him, unlike some of the physios who have told me that they can't do anything for the pain but can improve my core stability so that the inflammation doesn't return.

I feel like laughing heartily now at the physios who have insisted that the inflammation won't return if I'm religious in my core work. Hah!

I'll be back to the doctor next week because she only gave me enough NSAIDs to get me through to Boxing Day, when doctor's offices will be closed for two days after that for the public holidays. I may also discuss a higher dosage (I'm on the lowest dose of celebrex at the moment and, although I've been shown that I'm worse without it, I'm still in a lot of pain) and whether it's time to start finding out what causes the inflammation in my SI joint.

In other news...

I went to a carol concert last night. It was at the local Anglican church in aid of the local foodbank and I really enjoyed it. There were lots of lovely old traditional carols (although I may never get the hang of the different tunes that a couple of them use) and quite a few modern Christmas songs. Good fun and my voice was a little hoarse afterwards. It's starting to feel rather seasonal.

The cats have decided that the tree is much less interesting now that it's not covered in a sheet. They only bother it when I'm in the room with the tree and not paying attention to them. Crazy animals. As it's an attention thing, I've taken to putting whichever of them commits persistant tree infractions (usually Kate) into the craft room for a time-out. That seems to work a little better than shouting and water spraying, probably because it's counter-productive for what they want!

It's the team Christmas lunch tomorrow, cleverly timed so that we can go home whenever we finished :-) As we did last year, we're hitting a local Greek restaurant and I'm totally committed to getting my paws on some deep-fried zucchini for my appetizer. That stuff is like heaven on a plate. A calorie-laden, artery-clogging heaven, but still heaven on a plate. Om nom nom.

My department likes eating. We prefer all our social events to have an element of food. This week there has been a pot luck and tomorrow's meal. Next week there is another pot luck and my Monday afternoon status meeting will be at the local really awesome coffee shop. I can't imagine why I enjoy working here :-)
