...that Doctor Who casting spoiler which yesterday it was impossible not to run into, what with it being on various news websites in addition to the blogging world - my two Euros.
I honestly can't figure out who is in a position to takeover for Moffat (and, dear god, please not Gatiss. Everything he writes just feels so mediocre to me). But I definitely think it is time for Moffat to conclude his run (the best case scenario would be a soft reboot like season 5, but it doesn't feel like that's going to happen because of JLC being signed for season 8).
I think the show missed an opportunity to leave the Ponds behind with the end of season 6 (as much as a I loved the Ponds), making the first half of season 7 too emotional and the last half too by-the-numbers. Either way, the last season feels messy and just not very good.
In spite of all that, I'm sad about Smith leaving because I could have watched him for a million years. I never seemed to tire of him even when I tired of the show this season.
I hear you re: Gatiss. (I like him as an actor, really I do. Just wish he wouldn't write as well.) Re: future show runner, hm, how about Toby Whitehouse? Has successfully run a show - Being Human, and has written for DW before (School Reunion)?
Oh definitely - as I said in a previous post, the Ponds' s6 exit should have been permanent, giving us an entire season for Clara to be developed as something other than mystery girl and for her and the Doctor to establish a credible bond.
Paul Cornell amusingly suggested Damian Lewis on twitter, because ginger.
LOL. That would be fun though I suspect he's too busy. I was rooting for Adrian Lester but he's categorically denied being interested.
I must admit that I've lost interest over the past series and would agree that it's probably a good moment for Moffat to go after he's dealt with the 50th anniversary.
Yes, it's take or leave, not must tv for me now. Which is relaxing to watch, but you know, I miss the times when I deeply cared. Then again: I still haven't watched all that's available of Old Who and still there are eras which I like less than others. That's okay!

Yes, I've been here before too, but I'm always sad when it happens. It feels as if there's something wrong with my universe when Doctor Who isn't "must see TV".
Rupert Grint is just the "the doctor is getting younger" meme. Really doubt he could carry it off convincingly, or that the BBC could afford him for an extended run.
It certainly is an advantage in that the actor doesn't come burdened with a previous image and can establish his own take on the Doctor. Otoh, Christopher Eccleston was partly hired BECAUSE he was a well known actor and they needed one for bringing the show back.
Actually, I'd already seen Smith in two or three series before he was cast for Who. He was the undoubted highlight of an adaptation of Pulman's The Ruby in the Smoke, which starred Billie Piper. His was the only character you could imagine having a life off-screen. He was clearly an actor to keep an eye on. He had a larger but less interesting role in the one-season political drama Party Animals.

And that's how it should be in my opinion.
