So, next month, there will be a new Superman movie. The first trailer of which made me fear the worst with its GRIMDARK aura and Pa Kent seemingly suggesting his son should have let people die rather than show his powers, the second was better, putting more emphasis on hope, and also, it had Lois Lane, and the third has that advantage as well but ( Read more... )

Which in turn makes me realize that what I really want from a Superman movie, and am not likely to get, is a big screen version of the first two seasons of Lois & Clark, not a superhero movie at all but the tale of two bantering reporters, one of whom has superpowers, fighting crime together. And that's my problem.

You, me, and everyone on the Lois and Clark bulletin boards.

1) I loved Lois & Clark. Never mind it's not the kind of pairing I generally ship - it was just a wonderful show. So I'm completely with you on wanting more like that.

2) Also, I like superhero movies best when they're not actually superhero movies. (See X-Men: First Class.) But of course they're not going to give us that with Superman. As you say - my problem. *sighs*

I usually don't go with best-friends-to-lovers pairings either, but Lois & Clark are my one exception. They're just so much fun and endearing.

I had an ominous feeling when reading interviews with Snyder and one other person involved with the Man of Steel production about how they didn't use to like Superman and loved Batman so much more because he was dark and badass, and then they thought, well, alien angst, that's totally unexplored angle, and I thought, YOU ARE MISSING THE POINT. Nobody seriously wants Superman to be Batman. Or like Batman. That's what you have Batman for. Superman is around to be optimistic, and Clark is there to banter with Lois while they fight crime.

...you know, I have the feeling Snyder watched Kill Bill II and thought that Bill's speech about how Clark Kent is the expression of Superman's contempt for humanity was the real deal, never mind Bill is the villain of the saga. *sigh*

I really need to get around to watching Lois & Clark. (Not an original idea, but still true.) Even without having seen it, I would probably show up for the L&C movie you describe in a way that I'm not going to for this one. As you admirably examine, the trailer does not inspire.

A very wise fan recently explained the two current Holmes fandoms to me with "Sherlock is to DC as Elementary is to Marvel," and despite the fact that I am far from an expert in this fields, the comparison struck me as fundamentally true.

I can so see that re: DC-Sherlock versus Marvel-Elementary!

Also, I think you'd enjoy Lois & Clark. Some of its writers went on to work for Joss Whedon on Buffy and Angel, and it shows.

I read a TON of Lois & Clark fanfiction before I ever saw the show, and so I think my head!version of the Superman mythos is a combination of that and the Chris Reeve movies. In other words, he's not Batman; he's on the whole cheerful and straightforward (except for the secret identity bit) and kind and honourable and decent and not particularly angsty. Oh, I mean, he has worries and stresses and sometimes can't save everyone or whatever, but to me Superman is essentially a hopeful story.

And while I found Lois & Clark to be somewhat cheesy when I finally sat down and watched it, the previews for this new movie also worry me the same way they worry you. I hope I'm wrong! (I was wrong about both Iron Man 3 and Star Trek Into Darkness!) But, I mean, come on. Bitter and dark doesn't necessarily mean deep, man. I want to believe a man can fly, and I want to see him enjoy it, and I want to see him use it to help people. Is that too much to ask for, or too simplistic? No, I do not think it is.

I don't think it is, either. Annd I'm so with you on the "not Batman!" front, I can't tell you.
