My Chummy and Sister Bernadette! Or Shelia as I shall call her. It's amazing that a full year could pass in only three weeks but there it is, isn't it? I wonder if things will be the same? Will Sheila still practice midwifery or will she too in a year's time be a mother? I mean, wow. It was so touching when she hugged Sister Julienne.

I didn't think Chummy's birth would go the way it did, but I like you, am glad both she and her little Fred (brilliant name choice there) survived it.

Oh, my little show! I will miss it terribly because it was my calm oasis show in a sea of drama. You know? Everything is done with such a light touch and the creators know they don't have to bang us over the head with it. Patrick kissing Sheila's hand with the ring on it. Sister Julienne tucking little Fred in with his very ill mum. Even the Jimmy storyline which I never liked ending in simply, "Be happy!"

Aww! Now I can read the next book! I'm very curious about the differences and similarities!

I think Sheila will still practice. She is good at her job, after all, plus there's the economic necessity now she's part of a three people household (whether or not there will be a fourth).

Yes, "Be happy" was lovely. As was Chummy calling her son after Fred.

I'm still getting used to Sheila's name! It almost makes her a new person. And she's kind of blonde! I was sure she was dark-haired. And she's so young. They are going to be so happy. :-)

Chummy, Fred, and the Boy Scouts is one of the cutest aspects of this show. The boys dutifully try whatever Fred and Chummy come up with. :-) I loved that moment when Chummy jumped in with her nice dress to help Fred's sow give birth. She's such a good friend and her boyfriend, now husband, loved that about her.

Aww. Such a special little show. :-)

So I've finished the second book, Shadows of the Workhouse, which is about characters who grew up in the workhouse. The second book isn't about Jenny or even about midwifery any more. She does allude at the end that she left midwifery and married and had two daughters but that's about all we get about her ( ... )

Thank you for the review! Very interesting. I expect it will always be a mixture of fiction and facts on the show, as real life stories rarely offer a proper narrative arc. :)

Jane's section was fascinating and really unforgettable. It had that unmistakable ring of truth to it, even though it was terrible what happened to her in the workhouse.

I did read some interviews with Jennifer Worth before she died. She died before the filming of the show, but she did approve the casting of the lead and picked out Miranda Hart for Chummy! That was so heartening to hear because all the actors, from Fred to Sister Monica Joan, live those roles for me.
