I also really liked Lady Mary, not least because Amanda Hale has been on my radar since she managed the not at all easy feat of upstaging Romola Garai in the miniseries adaptation of The Crimson Petal and the White, and I've been hoping for her to get more interesting work (right now the only other thing she's on that I'm aware of is the tedious steampunk cop drama Ripper Street). Lady Mary is definitely that kind of role - Hale gets to be funny, scary, crazy, and righteously angry, to rub Alex the wrong way and get some very valid points in, even without the revelation at the end of the episode that Hal killed Larry
( ... )
Now I must check out The Crimsom Petal and the White.
One thing I found interesting was that when Mary explained to Alex how she's been keeping Hal grounded, she said that she knew there had been other influences in his life, and then listed exclusively ghost women - Pearl and Annie. (...) When I think this episode argues that it's actually the latters' influence that is more central to Hal's life, for better and worse.
Oh, no question, but my guess is that it's not so much that Hal didn't mention either werewolf but that Mary probably instinctively classed the ghosts as the important ones as she herself is one.
I also agree it's really past time we move past the manipulator-preys-on-Tom stories (unless, of course, it's Tom NOT falling for manipulation from the get go, and even then, I'd like a break between manipulator stories. Otoh the Lady Mary tale - which was new - was good enough that I more enjoyed the episode than was irritated by it.
