Oh yes, such a season for ripping your heart out and stomping it to bits. And especially so because for each of the kids an adult tries to save them and fails - Cutty's mistake being far more forgivable than Carver's as there was no way he could have known how triggering his words were to Michael - except for Colvin, who notably steps outside the system to save Namond, speaking to his father as one soldier to another.

There were so many great moments this season that echoed the theme, like Snoop rising out of the playground in the dark, an angel-faced killer, and of course her great opening scene that sets up everything for the season, where she goes to the hardware store to buy equipment and gets instruction from the old clerk - a lesson she puts to a use he couldn't have imagined. And then there's my favourite Lester scene of all time where he figures out exactly where Marlo's been hiding the bodies. I love my BBC Sherlock but no amount of onscreen graphics or fast-talking can beat the deductive power of Lester simply touching the new nail and then looking up at the boarded-up building.

I could go on and on! But in the spirit of helping you finish the series - though I took a three month break to recover from s4 - I will say that s5 does offer some hope, and in some surprising places.

That scene exactly made me think of your "genius detective" comment!

Good to know there is some hope in s5.
