Fannish5: Five Most Badass Grandparents

Sep 30, 2012 10:06

Aha! Let's see who comes to mind.

1.) Jack Bristow and Irina Derevko. Not just because they're tough superspies. I may have Alias s5 issues, but these two did deliver their own grandchild without killing it, their daughter or each other and given the backstory of everyone involved and situation just then, this was very badass indeed. (Also, Sydney deserves a medal for putting up with labour, bickering parents and getting shot at at the same time, but that wasn't the question.) Also, Jack's idea of hiring baby sitters is so very Jack, is all I'm saying. :)

2.) Livia in I, Claudius. Look, the question didn't say "nice", "good", or "loving". Livia was a grandmother who scared, manipulated and occasionally sacrificed her grandchildren like no one's business. But she was unquestionably badass (hard to think of anyone in the novel or show who was more so), and unquestionably a grandmother. So.

3.) Wilf(red) Mott in Doctor Who. It was him or the First Doctor as my representative of Whodom, and One has the drawback of having locked out his granddaughter For Her Own Good, then never facing the music of getting back to her, which is not badass, so there is that. Wilf, otoh, took on a Dalek with a paint ball spray, provided his granddaughter Donna with constant love and approval when her relationship with her mother was too issue ridden to give the second, and was infinitely huggable and badass as the same time, no matter whether an alien invasion was going on (which he was staying for, him and the Queen), he was reminiscing about Palestine and age with the Doctor in the midst of yet another near apocalypse, or he was sharing tea with Donna while stargazing.

4.) Lucia Moretti in Torchwood: Children of Earth. Okay, so we don't see it on screen, but when Alice said to her son Stephen "remember what Grandma taught you?", I cheered. Lucia was a Torchwood agent and a lover of Jack Harkness who died old and of natural causes, which in itself is beating the odds, doubly, in a big way. And she also taught her daughter and grandson, whom during her life time she saw safe and sound in civilian life, basic martial arts in case someone came after them anyway. In conclusion: badass grandmother.

5.) Patty Hewes in Damages. I haven't seen the fifth season yet, and don't spoil me, but speaking strictly from canon of the first four, I think no one can doubt the badassness of Patty. In real life I would stay far away from her, except, of course, if I was someone screwed over by a big cooperation and in need of a lawyer. On tv she's magnificent to behold in her ruthlessness. Also she raises her granddaughter by herself. Not that she's that great at it (ask the gazillion fired nannies), but Patty never shied away from responsibility in her life, and she does care fiercely for the kid.
