Of novels, repeating constellations and recs

Travelling with various air planes and trains through Italy left me with time to read Lindsey Davis' newest novel, Master and God. Now Lindsey Davis is most famous for her series of Roman mysteries centered around one Marcus Didius Falco, but she also writes non-Falco historical novels, of which this, as far as I know, is the third. The first one ( Read more... )

Well, of course I do! Especially since I gave a paper about exactly that topic a couple of years ago. Although they cut the central bit I focused on:

That, being daily swallow'd by men's eyes,
They surfeited with honey and began
To loathe the taste of sweetness, whereof a little
More than a little is by much too much.

I mean, I don't mind that much that they cut it, but it turns out you can get a surprising amount of queer-studies mileage out of references to honey in the history plays.

Anyway, I am really looking forward to these productions. Because HISTORIES YAY.

I am sooo out of touch. I never knew about the new Henry IV/V versions.... I watched the clip and thought: I know that face, I know that guy. Took a moment for me to realize: LOKI!

Thanks for posting the clips!

You should have seen my chin drop when I spotted him as a clueless young clergyman with blond curls in Miss Austen Regrets. :) Also, the only reason why I knew about the Henries before this clip got online was that I have two die-hard Shakespeareans on my flist.

I love your icon. :)
I used to be a die-hard Shakespearean, when I still had contact with a handful of university people. *sigh*

Have you ever seen In the Bleak Midwinter, a Branagh film about a Hamlet production? Still not out on DVD, as far as I can tell. :(

And why is it taking so long for Joss's Much Ado to come out???

I did, and talk about it here.

I hear you on Joss' Much Ado. Of course, given that the release of Cabin in the Woods (which I'm not nearly as eager to see) in Germany has been postponed again, chances are that even if/when Much Ado is released in the US, it will take ages for us to watch it as well. I mean, as far as I know he financed it himself, which means he has to convince a studio to buy it first in order to distribute it. Which is probably a bit easier now that he has a blockbuster like Avengers in his belt, but even so I doubt that the studios are going to jump at the chance, since they'll figure (wrongly) people watching Shakespeare films won't be familiar with Joss Whedon and vice versa.

Oh, shiny! Thank you. Mind you, it only works as complete crack for me, because the logistics of inserting Abigail Brand and SWORD into the movieverse just don't work.(I, um, might have given this some thought due to her being one of my favourite characters. *g*) Her being half alien and SWORD formed specifically to deal with aliens are both quintessential and work in the comicverse, where there has been alien contact and official interaction since the 1960s, but not in the movieverse, where it's canon that the Asgardians as of Thor the film are the first aliens to get noticed making contact by the world (read: the US), "last year" as of The Avengers in movieverse time. Therefore neither Brand nor SWORD can exist (yet).

(Also I'm getting rapidly allergic to anything even smelling of Loki apology fic, and a story where he was just faking it and was a good guy all along counts, but that's my issue. :)

I agree about the implausibility, but I thought of you at once, and I enjoyed her sharp dialogue. Re Loki apology fics, depending on how well written, I can enjoy them but not believe them. I have been enjoying a great deal various fics dealing with Loki's psychological issues and having to come to terms with what he is/what he's done. My favorites are those dealing with the family issues, of course, both slash with Thor and not ( ... )
