Seeing San Vitale is one of my life goals. Have you read Stella Duffy's novel about Theodora?

Oh wow! Ravenna is one of the places I most want to visit.

Galla Placidia is one of those characters that no-one would dare invent!

So beautiful! Many thanks. I really love Gillian Bradshaw's book on Theodora, too--and Guy Gavriel Kay's Sarantium books also. I've wanted to go to Ravenna many times, and always missed. So glad you went and took marvelous pictures. Thanks again.

I mostly know about this era from Eric Flint and David Drake's alternate history Belisarius series. He plays a very appropriate role in the series.

No but his son does, and Justinian becomes becomes Grand Justicar which is like chief lawgiver in the empire, he can't remain emperor because he's blinded in a failed coup. It's a several book series and I think the first may available to read for read on Baen's website.

We really do have to visit Ravenna next time we're in Italy... We had to settle for Monza and the cathedral last time.
