Barbara Hambly is an author whose novels, by and large, never fail to captivate me. Ah, I love Barbara Hambly! Though I've only read the Benjamin January mysteries (save the 9th, the most recent), and Those Who Hunt the Night, which was a favorite in my high school days. I've been meaning to thank you for the Yuletide rec of the Benjamin January mystery, btw--that was fabulous & fun & so true to the book.

I really need to read more Hambly, now that you mention it, and I'm on a historical fiction kick right now anyways.

If you can via a library (I don't think it's in print anymore), get her one shot Roman novel, which is a Roman mystery before these became the fashion and has one of the funniest (and well-researched) takes on early Christians around. (They keep getting in theological arguments with each other even on the way to the arena, for starters....)

Thank you for the link, Dragonsbane and Those Who Hunt the Night were among my favourite books for a long time. And think they have most interesting takes on dragons and vampires respectively.

Oh, I so agree, both about dragons and vampires. She really gave them her own twist rather than just repeat someone elses, and I confess I can't think of dragons without bearing hers in mind. (Even when I wrote the Great Dragon in Merlin. *g*)
