Pics and a rec

Yesterday Real Life brought me to Olten in Switzerland, where I hadn't been before. Turns out they have this really beautiful wooden 18th century bridge, which I thought I'd share with you:

Reminds me of our [used to be] wealth of covered bridges in my area. Most of them have been replaced by modern bridges cause, well they're better - right?

Safer, presumably, for the traffic, but as for the aesthetics...

That is a very nice bridge. The one in Luzern is better known, but it burned down :-(

Swiss German is fascinating, even if it drives me crazy. I live on the french side of the Röstigraben and I learned Hochdeutsch at school, so every time I cross to the german part I always feel so embarrassed I can't speak my own country's lingo.

I remember the first time I visited Switzerland and thought "Tv LIED to me about what Schweizerdeutsch actually sounds like..."

Alas I had not watched it before that first visit...

So pretty! And so--well, I've never been to Switzerland, but what's so striking to me is that it comes from a place where 1) wood is not an issue and 2) rain is.

Thanks for the Angel link, btw. I've never seen the show but I could follow it based on my Buffy knowledge, which was very gratifying. And I second you on the Cordelia voice!

Switzerland: have some pictures of German speaking Switzerland from when I was there two years ago, as well as Italian-speaking Switzerland and the Cote d'Azure!

Angel the show is very much worth checking out if you find the time, btw. I always joke that I find BTVS more meta-inspiring and AtS more fanfic-inspiring (as can be seen on my bibliography), and it does contain my two favourite characters in any Joss Whedon show.

Pretteeee bridge!

And I never realised people said "merci" in it, despite having spent some time in Zurich.

Merci: well, they pronounce it differently than you French do - emphasis on the first syllable instead of the second. But they do say it, all the time!
