You know I almost said 'in Star Trek' with my question and didn't because it would be too limiting. I'm glad I didn't because this was a really interesting answer to my question.

I watched and rewatched the miniseries and s1 of BSG back in the day but I don't think I've seen the latter series more than once for each episode. It's unrelated to what you said and probably very much a me thing but the moment when it all went pear shaped is 'One year later'. That kind of time skip always takes me out of shows and makes me wait for the rest. Like Absolute Power in Stargate SG-1 has one. They basically went for the big cliffhanger then had to try very hard to get back to the old status quo as it were.

But yes, if they'd planned it all more ahead of time that would be great, it's not just that they didn't have a plan but that they put front and centre of every episode that there was a plan which certainly doesn't help. I've read that that was forced on them by studio execs, but also that s3 was more episode because of the same studio ( ... )
