Between the moon landing and the July 20th 1944 anniversary, this weekend is full of remembrances. Not personal ones, as I was born in the year of the moon landing, which I always took as a good omen; sometimes I joke it’s responsible for my sci fi ness and basic optimism, signs pointing to dystopia not withstanding.
Also responsible for my basic optimism: Star Trek: The Next Generation being my favourite Trek along with DS9, which is why I was looking foward to Star Trek: Picard anyway and am now even more so since both the dropped trailer and news from SDCC tell me who, in addition to Jean-Luc, will be back:

Seven of Nine, Hugh, Data, and, not in the trailer but announced, Troi and Riker. I’ve always had a soft spot for Picard-meets-Seven stories but never thought to get them outside of fanfiction, and while Data wasn’t my favourite the way he was for many, I thought the ending Nemesis gave him (complete with B4 presented as a possible Ersatz-Data) was pretty cynical and unworthy of the show (but then, so was Nemesis in totem), so hooray for some sort of resurrection. (Mind you, the trailer made it look like the scene with Data could take place in Picard’s mind.) While I fully expect the roles of all of the above to be limited, with the new characters getting more screen time, I appreciate the emotional continuity of Troi and Riker showing up. (And yes, so should Beverly. And Geordi. But especially Beverly, unless she’s dead. But maybe she and Jean-Luc got married and divorced in this reality as well?)
Seven comes across as far more casual than last we saw her, but that was two decades ago in her timeline as well, and since I assume her Borg-ness is a reason why she’ll show up in this show (along with Hugh), I trust she won’t have become entirely Annika Hansen. And while I don’t want another Borg story per se - in the sense of the cubed once being around in the present, because it’s been done, and done, and done, - I’m all for a meeting of emotionally scarred ex drones with different ways of coping.
The female admiral Picard is talking to at the beginning of the trailer: Necheyev or Janeway? (Janeway had a cameo in the later TNG movies establishing she and Picard know each other, and if it’s her, she’s probably sent Seven after him. Otoh Necheyev would make continuity sense as well.
Possibile destroyer of words girl who feels safe with Picard: see, if this was fanfic it would be Q who has given him/herself amnesia, but I really doubt it. 😊
Anyway: Captain my captain! I’m fond of most of the others as well, but you’re still my fave.
Also dropped: a trailer for three Star Trek shorts (spiritual successors of the three that were posted between s1 and s2 of Discovery), all three starring Pike, Number One and Spock. I’m there for those as well. Gimme, Netflix.
Lastly, in honor of the day, one of my favourite moon poems, by Ted Hughes:
Full Moon and Little Frieda
A cool small evening shrunk to a dog bark and the clank of a bucket -
And you listening.
A spider's web, tense for the dew's touch.
A pail lifted, still and brimming - mirror
To tempt a first star to a tremor.
Cows are going home in the lane there, looping the hedges with their warm
wreaths of breath -
A dark river of blood, many boulders,
Balancing unspilled milk.
'Moon!' you cry suddenly, 'Moon! Moon!'
The moon has stepped back like an artist gazing amazed at a work
That points at him amazed.
