Elementary 5.07 and 5.08

5.07: Meh. Which is why I didn't review it last week. The case of the week was an illustration of "if you really want to tackle this topic in this day and age, don't do it in the space of eight minutes while devoting the rest of the episode to red herrings". And the ongoing arc story was well played, actor-wise, but I'm withholding judgment until I see what comes out of it because if nothing more happens, it sucks.

5.08. Now we're talking. Enjoyed the case of the week, enjoyed the character interaction. See, if the episode had committed the same mistakes the previous two did, it would have made an animal right-ist or advocate against genetically engineered food the killer. And they'd been brought to justice via a frame job. But no, the killers are a couple of greedy profit hungry company guys, and when Holmes and Watson can't prove their guilt, they instead use their greed to turn one of them to testify against each other. Also, Sherlock's ongoing digs through the episode against "Big Meat" were actually satisfying. I mean, he could have additionally made a joke about a certain NY based creep who failed at selling steaks under his obnoxious name and then moved on to a university scheme, but Elementary already did the fraudulent university episode, so.

While the dangers of boredom for the recovery process were something I seem to recall we've already done in a previous season, they don't stop being true for Sherlock Holmes, and the Sherlock-Joan interaction throughout was great, and highlighted their friendship and her competence. The ACD allusion to the case of the Six Napoleons was amusing, not least since I believe that is one Moffat is going to update in the next season of Sherlock. I note this is the second time this season we see Sherlock has gone back to playing the violin, btw, and wonder whether it's just a thing or whether it will lead somewhere.

Lastly: first time I've seen Fran Krantz in something not produced by Joss Whedon. Alas for actor versatility, he was type cast.
