I am clueless about Buffy and Angel. But sometimes it makes me happy simply how you phrase things, this lj-cut text being a shiny example. :)

It still baffles me that people *don't* like S4, for all the reasons you mention.

I think the objections I've heard most often were "too dark", "I can't stand seeing Cordelia this way" , and "I don't like Connor" . And if any of these are felt, I can understand why they don't like the season, because Connor is pretty central to it, as is possessed Cordelia, and everyone has a different line they draw at "too dark". So rationally, I get why there are people who dislike the season.

But emotionally? It has me mentally splutter and go "but my favourite season OMG!"

This makes me want to pull out my season 4 DVDs and watch it again. I agree with your point that it's at the moment when Angel makes his decision to save Connor by giving him up that he also gives up on saving himself. That doesn't mean he gives up on fighting the good fight, but that he accepts that his soul is doomed. That last scene breaks my heart.

It's been so long since I watched AtS (unlike Buffy, I only watched it once) that I'm now intrigued to go back and rewatch...

I may have watched some AtS more often than some BTVS, to be honest, though I love both shows and freely concede Buffy is the greater achievement.
