I agree with your overall "meh" assessment of the episode (not a popular opinion, as far as I can tell online), and adore your first paragraph as a great summary of both the episode and the series

Irving: right! Maybe he'll be front and centre in the second episode, who knows, but a line of dialogue wouldn't have hurt.

I only just rewatched S1 in anticipation of S2, and just wanted to say that Abbie didn't actually just conveniently lose the amulet in between seasons but in the S1 finale. Moloch approached to attack her, she grabbed the amulet from her neck and pressed it into his chest to wound him, dropped it in the scuffle, but had to run away before she could retrieve it. This was before the whole dollhouse scene.
