I didn't go out Halloween night. I was home in bed by 10pm. I am fine with that. It was shitty out and I didn't ever have a night destination anyway. I did put out the rage signal via several social media outlets but no one responded. I would take that as a sign that I am unpopular and not worth hanging out with, but we all know the truth is that people are scared to rage with me because I am a pro lever ragemode specialist in a land filled with "3 drinks and I'm done" amateurs. Don't be scared next time...I can ratchet it down a notch so you can keep up.
Anyway, Halloween DAY was freakin awesome. I met up with
theothergraham and went to Psycho Cross, a cyclocross race at Dick Lane Velodrome. For thos of you that don't know, cyclocross is where people race using bikes that are similar to the thin tired road bikes in traditional bike racing, but they use them on a course which is partially off road, and usually has some sort of obstacles that force the riders to dismount and carry their bikes for a section on every lap. It is also a race where it is not uncommon for spectators to hand the racers beer to chug while they are navigating the course. It is one part bike race and part party.
At a normal bike race, rain would suck, but at cyclocross, rain just makes everything better. Mud. Lots and lots of mud. So the shitty rainy weather was actually perfect.
We hung out for the whole day, and only missed the very beginning class. Word had gone around that NPR was going to be there to do some field recording for the little segment they have where they play recorded sounds with commentary. Graham spotted the NPR girl who was really friendly and ended up interviewing him for a while. Wish I knew how I could find the segment they make out of that material because I'd love to hear it. Iisten to the nipper on the way to work everyday so maybe I'll hear it live!
Anyway, we drank a buttload of beertrons, rang the cowbell a lot (cowbells are big at bike races...), and I took 201 photos. Out of that 201, I found 27 of them -passable- and about 3 of them really good. The 27 are posted
here. Take a look if you want to see a really different kind of bike race.
Hey look at that I made a real LJ post. Hooorrraaaayyy.
