Heres is how NOT to get things done:
1. make to do list the evening before first of four days off work
2. misplace list until last few hours of said four days
No worries though...I still got things done...just not the things on the list.
Today I found a flier for the first gig I ever dj'ed. My name is not on the flier.
I was called to play at the last minute when the actual dj on the flier (Dan Nigrin) didn't show up on time. It was the first time I ever played on decks with pitch control. Up til that .point I had to hand count the bpms on my records and I could only mix together things that were already matched tempo-wise, or maybe like 1 bpm off...I had a radio shack mixer with no cueing volume and two decks with no pitch control for practicing. This was before the days when you could walk into a music store a regular person and walk out a dj because you just bought a pre-configured beginner set up.
The gig turned out fun. I played for a little over an hour til Dan showed up. The only records I remember playing were
Baby Ford - Beach Bump (a vocal-less dub version),
Raze - Break For Love (again, a more stripped down version on the flip side of the single)and
Todd Terry - Bango (which is STILL a chooooon). I prolly played a bunch of hip house too...it was 1989...hip house and acieeeeed! At some point Scotto, the promoter, came out into the crowd as he Human Money tree, wearing just some underwear and dollar bills taped all over his himself.
Scotto eventually went on to form NASA NYC. Looking at his flier archive is wild..he was right up in the thick of the whole club kid thing so there are all these fliers for parties made famous after the fact due to the Michael Alig murder of Angel Melendez.
Disco Bloodbath indeed.
